When the priest Pashhur son of Immer, the official in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things,he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the Lord’s temple. (niv)

Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long.But if I say,“ I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.I hear many whispering,“ Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying,“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten. (niv)

“ The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.Last of all, he sent his son to them.‘ They will respect my son,’ he said.“ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. (niv)

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. (niv)

“ In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion. (niv)

When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. (niv)

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forwardand declared,“ This fellow said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus,“ Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.“ But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.What do you think?”“ He is worthy of death,” they answered. (niv)

In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.” (niv)

“ If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?Your relatives, members of your own family— even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you. (niv)

They said,“ Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.” (niv)

The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. (niv)

So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!“ You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. (niv)

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. (niv)

I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying,“ Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.”But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands”— (niv)
