官长和众百姓对祭司和先知说：“这人是不该死的，因为他奉耶和华—我们上帝的名向我们说话。”国中的长老就有几个人起来，对聚集的众百姓说：

于是官长们对王说：“求你把这人处死，因他向城里剩下的士兵和众人说这样的话，使他们的手发软。这人不是为这百姓求平安，而是叫他们受灾祸。”西底家王说：“看哪，他在你们手中，王不能反对你们所做的事。”他们就拿住耶利米，把他丢在王的儿子玛基雅的井里；那口井在护卫兵的院中。他们用绳子把耶利米缒下去，井里没有水，只有淤泥，耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

犹大的领袖、耶路撒冷的领袖、官员、祭司，和从牛犊切块中经过的这地的众百姓，

耶利米说：“你这是谎话，我并不是去投降迦勒底人。”伊利雅不听耶利米的话，就逮捕他，把他带到官长那里。官长们恼怒耶利米，打了他，把他囚在约拿单文士的房屋中，因为他们把这屋子当作监牢。耶利米来到地牢，进入牢房，在那里拘留多日。
