他就下到王宫，进入文士的屋子。众首领，就是文士以利沙玛、示玛雅的儿子第莱雅、亚革波的儿子以利拿单、沙番的儿子基玛利雅、哈拿尼雅的儿子西底家，和其余的首领都坐在那里。于是米该亚对他们述说他所听见的一切话，就是巴录向百姓念那书的时候所听见的。众首领就打发古示的曾孙、示利米雅的孙子、尼探雅的儿子犹底到巴录那里，对他说：“你将所念给百姓听的书卷拿在手中到我们这里来。”尼利亚的儿子巴录就手拿书卷来到他们那里。他们对他说：“请你坐下，念给我们听。”巴录就念给他们听。他们听见这一切话就害怕，面面相观，对巴录说：“我们必须将这一切话告诉王。”他们问巴录说：“请你告诉我们，你怎样从他口中写这一切话呢？”巴录回答说：“他用口向我说这一切话，我就用笔墨写在书上。”众首领对巴录说：“你和耶利米要去藏起来，不可叫人知道你们在哪里。”

首领和众民就对祭司、先知说：“这人是不该死的，因为他是奉耶和华我们神的名向我们说话。”国中的长老就有几个人起来，对聚会的众民说：

然而，沙番的儿子亚希甘保护耶利米，不交在百姓的手中治死他。

其中的首领仿佛豺狼抓撕掠物，杀人流血，伤害人命，要得不义之财。

以利拿单和第莱雅，并基玛利雅恳求王不要烧这书卷，他却不听。

于是首领对王说：“求你将这人治死；因他向城里剩下的兵丁和众民说这样的话，使他们的手发软。这人不是求这百姓得平安，乃是叫他们受灾祸。”西底家王说：“他在你们手中，无论何事，王也不能与你们反对。”他们就拿住耶利米，下在哈米勒的儿子玛基雅的牢狱里；那牢狱在护卫兵的院中。他们用绳子将耶利米系下去。牢狱里没有水，只有淤泥，耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

耶利米说：“你这是谎话，我并不是投降迦勒底人。”伊利雅不听他的话，就拿住他，解到首领那里。首领恼怒耶利米，就打了他，将他囚在文士约拿单的房屋中，因为他们以这房屋当作监牢。耶利米来到狱中，进入牢房，在那里囚了多日。

“看哪，以色列的首领各逞其能，在你中间流人之血。
