就下到王宮，進入書記的房間裡；所有領袖都在那裡坐著，他們是書記以利沙瑪、示瑪雅的兒子第萊雅、亞革波的兒子以利拿單、沙番的兒子基瑪利雅、哈拿尼雅的兒子西底家和所有其餘的領袖。米該亞就把所聽見的一切都告訴他們，就是巴錄向眾人宣讀那書的時候，他所聽見的。於是所有的領袖差派古示的曾孫、示利米雅的孫子、尼探雅的兒子猶底，去見巴錄，說：“請你把向眾人宣讀的那書卷親自拿來。”尼利亞的兒子巴錄就把書卷親自帶到他們那裡。他們對他說：“請坐下，念給我們聽。”巴錄就向他們宣讀。他們聽見這一切話，就驚懼起來，面面相覷，對巴錄說：“我們必須把這一切話稟告王。”他們向巴錄說：“請告訴我們，你怎樣寫下這一切話，是耶利米親口說的嗎？”巴錄對他們說：“這一切話是他親口向我講述的，我就用墨寫在書上。”眾領袖對巴錄說：“你和耶利米都要去躲藏起來；不要給人知道你們在甚麼地方。”

於是眾領袖和眾民對祭司和先知說：“這人不應該處死，因為他奉耶和華我們神的名對我們說話。”那地的長老中有幾個人起來，對集合在場的全體人民說：

然而沙番的兒子亞希甘卻保護耶利米，不許人把耶利米交在人民的手中處死。

其中的官長好像撕碎獵物的豺狼，流人的血，滅人的命，為要得不義之財。

雖然以利拿單、第萊雅和基瑪利雅懇求王不要燒這書卷，王卻不聽他們，

於是眾領袖對王說：“這人應該處死，因為他向這城裡剩下的軍兵和眾民說了這樣的話，使他們的手都軟弱無力。這人不是為這人民求平安，卻是惹來災禍的。”西底家王說：“看哪！他在你們手中；王不能作甚麼反對你們。”他們就拿住耶利米，把他丟在王子瑪基雅的井裡，那井是在衛兵的院子裡的；他們用繩子把耶利米縋下去。井裡沒有水，只有淤泥；耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

那些從牛犢兩半中間走過去的人，就是猶大的領袖、耶路撒冷的領袖、宮中的臣宰、祭司和這地的眾民。

耶利米說：“這是謊話！我並不是去投降迦勒底人。”但伊利雅不聽他，仍拿住他，把他帶到眾領袖那裡。眾領袖都惱怒耶利米，就打他，並且把他關進監裡，就是在書記約拿單的房子裡，因為他們已把這房子改作監獄。耶利米進了地牢裡的一個囚房，在那裡監禁了多日。

看哪！以色列的領袖們恃著自己的能力，在你裡面流人的血。
