就下到王宫，进入书记的房间里；所有领袖都在那里坐着，他们是书记以利沙玛、示玛雅的儿子第莱雅、亚革波的儿子以利拿单、沙番的儿子基玛利雅、哈拿尼雅的儿子西底家和所有其余的领袖。米该亚就把所听见的一切都告诉他们，就是巴录向众人宣读那书的时候，他所听见的。于是所有的领袖差派古示的曾孙、示利米雅的孙子、尼探雅的儿子犹底，去见巴录，说：“请你把向众人宣读的那书卷亲自拿来。”尼利亚的儿子巴录就把书卷亲自带到他们那里。他们对他说：“请坐下，念给我们听。”巴录就向他们宣读。他们听见这一切话，就惊惧起来，面面相觑，对巴录说：“我们必须把这一切话禀告王。”他们向巴录说：“请告诉我们，你怎样写下这一切话，是耶利米亲口说的吗？”巴录对他们说：“这一切话是他亲口向我讲述的，我就用墨写在书上。”众领袖对巴录说：“你和耶利米都要去躲藏起来；不要给人知道你们在什么地方。”

于是众领袖和众民对祭司和先知说：“这人不应该处死，因为他奉耶和华我们神的名对我们说话。”那地的长老中有几个人起来，对集合在场的全体人民说：

然而沙番的儿子亚希甘却保护耶利米，不许人把耶利米交在人民的手中处死。

其中的官长好像撕碎猎物的豺狼，流人的血，灭人的命，为要得不义之财。

虽然以利拿单、第莱雅和基玛利雅恳求王不要烧这书卷，王却不听他们，

于是众领袖对王说：“这人应该处死，因为他向这城里剩下的军兵和众民说了这样的话，使他们的手都软弱无力。这人不是为这人民求平安，却是惹来灾祸的。”西底家王说：“看哪！他在你们手中；王不能作什么反对你们。”他们就拿住耶利米，把他丢在王子玛基雅的井里，那井是在卫兵的院子里的；他们用绳子把耶利米缒下去。井里没有水，只有淤泥；耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

那些从牛犊两半中间走过去的人，就是犹大的领袖、耶路撒冷的领袖、宫中的臣宰、祭司和这地的众民。

耶利米说：“这是谎话！我并不是去投降迦勒底人。”但伊利雅不听他，仍拿住他，把他带到众领袖那里。众领袖都恼怒耶利米，就打他，并且把他关进监里，就是在书记约拿单的房子里，因为他们已把这房子改作监狱。耶利米进了地牢里的一个囚房，在那里监禁了多日。

看哪！以色列的领袖们恃着自己的能力，在你里面流人的血。
