By your messengers you have defied the Lord. You have said,‘ With my many chariots I have conquered the highest mountains— yes, the remotest peaks of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars and its finest cypress trees. I have reached its farthest heights and explored its deepest forests.

I, the Lord, have dedicated these soldiers for this task. Yes, I have called mighty warriors to express my anger, and they will rejoice when I am exalted.”Hear the noise on the mountains! Listen, as the vast armies march! It is the noise and shouting of many nations. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has called this army together.They come from distant countries, from beyond the farthest horizons. They are the Lord’s weapons to carry out his anger. With them he will destroy the whole land.

Then the Lord thundered,“ Bring on the men appointed to punish the city! Tell them to bring their weapons with them!”Six men soon appeared from the upper gate that faces north, each carrying a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man dressed in linen, who carried a writer’s case at his side. They all went into the Temple courtyard and stood beside the bronze altar.Then the glory of the God of Israel rose up from between the cherubim, where it had rested, and moved to the entrance of the Temple. And the Lord called to the man dressed in linen who was carrying the writer’s case.He said to him,“ Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”Then I heard the Lord say to the other men,“ Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity!Kill them all— old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here at the Temple.” So they began by killing the seventy leaders.“ Defile the Temple!” the Lord commanded.“ Fill its courtyards with corpses. Go!” So they went and began killing throughout the city.

And I myself will punish you for your sinfulness, says the Lord. I will light a fire in your forests that will burn up everything around you.’”

“ I have created the blacksmith who fans the coals beneath the forge and makes the weapons of destruction. And I have created the armies that destroy.But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken!

Open your doors, Lebanon, so that fire may devour your cedar forests.

O Israel, I will bring a distant nation against you,” says the Lord.“ It is a mighty nation, an ancient nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you cannot understand.

Israel is a foolish and stupid nation, for its people have turned away from God. Therefore, the one who made them will show them no pity or mercy.

What will you do when I punish you, when I send disaster upon you from a distant land? To whom will you turn for help? Where will your treasures be safe?You will stumble along as prisoners or lie among the dead. But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.“ What sorrow awaits Assyria, the rod of my anger. I use it as a club to express my anger.I am sending Assyria against a godless nation, against a people with whom I am angry. Assyria will plunder them, trampling them like dirt beneath its feet.But the king of Assyria will not understand that he is my tool; his mind does not work that way. His plan is simply to destroy, to cut down nation after nation.

“ The king was furious, and he sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their town.

In those days,” says the Lord,“ no sin will be found in Israel or in Judah, for I will forgive the remnant I preserve.“ Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim and against the people of Pekod.
