Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The Lord Almighty is mustering an army for war.They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens— the Lord and the weapons of his wrath— to destroy the whole country.

Then I heard him call out in a loud voice,“ Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.”And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple.Then he said to them,“ Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city.

I will punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the Lord. I will kindle a fire in your forests that will consume everything around you.’”

“ See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc;no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord.

Open your doors, Lebanon, so that fire may devour your cedars!

People of Israel,” declares the Lord,“ I am bringing a distant nation against you— an ancient and enduring nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you do not understand.

The fortified city stands desolate, an abandoned settlement, forsaken like the wilderness; there the calves graze, there they lie down; they strip its branches bare.When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For this is a people without understanding; so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.“ Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger, in whose hand is the club of my wrath!I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.

How desolate is Babylon among the nations!
