But suppose you do not obey these commands,” announces the Lord.“ Then I promise you that this palace will be destroyed. You can be as sure of this promise as you are sure that I live.” ’ ”

The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself— the Lord God Almighty declares:“ I abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses; I will deliver up the city and everything in it.”

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,

and said,“ I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

But if you do not obey me to keep the Sabbath day holy by not carrying any load as you come through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle an unquenchable fire in the gates of Jerusalem that will consume her fortresses.’”

I lift my hand to heaven and solemnly swear: As surely as I live forever,when I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand grasps it in judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me.I will make my arrows drunk with blood, while my sword devours flesh: the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders.”

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.

While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors.

The Babylonians set fire to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

People will answer,‘ Because they have forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them— that is why he brought all this disaster on them.’”

Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.

“ But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,

then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curse among all the nations of the earth.’”The priests, the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the Lord.But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said,“ You must die!Why do you prophesy in the Lord’s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted?” And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

So tell them,‘ As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say:In this wilderness your bodies will fall— every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

So I declared on oath in my anger,‘ They shall never enter my rest.’”

but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?
