“ Inquire now of the Lord for us because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. Perhaps the Lord will perform wonders for us as in times past so that he will withdraw from us.”

“ Ask the Lord to help us. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is attacking us. In the past the Lord did wonderful things for us. Maybe he’ll do them again. Then Nebuchadnezzar will pull his armies back from us.”

“ Inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all his wonderful deeds and will make him withdraw from us.”

“ Please speak to the Lord for us and ask him to help us. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking Judah. Perhaps the Lord will be gracious and do a mighty miracle as he has done in the past. Perhaps he will force Nebuchadnezzar to withdraw his armies.”

“ Inquire of the LORD on our behalf, since King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the LORD will perform for us something like all his past wondrous works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

“ Please inquire of the Lord in our behalf, because Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us; perhaps the Lord will deal with us in accordance with all His wonderful acts, so that the enemy will withdraw from us.”

Inquire, I pray thee, of Jehovah for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us: peradventure Jehovah will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

“ Ask the Lord on our behalf, since Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will perform for us something like all His past wonderful works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.

“ Please ask the LORD to come and help us, because King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is attacking us. Maybe the LORD will perform one of his miracles as in times past and make him stop attacking us and leave.”

“ Please inquire of Yahweh for us; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon makes war against us. Perhaps Yahweh will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may withdraw from us.”

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,“ Pray now to the Lord our God for us.”

It came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and sat before me.Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,“ Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” says the Lord God,“ I will not be inquired of by you.”’

“ Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,‘ Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me:“ Behold, Pharaoh’s army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them,“ I have heard. Indeed, I will pray to the Lord your God according to your words, and it shall be, that whatever the Lord answers you, I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you.”So they said to Jeremiah,“ Let the Lord be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not do according to everything which the Lord your God sends us by you.Whether it is pleasing or displeasing, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”

Now Samuel said to Saul,“ Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Saul answered,“ I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.”

And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets.

So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord( the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old:You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out.For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them.You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.

And Jeroboam said to his wife,“ Please arise, and disguise yourself, that they may not recognize you as the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Indeed, Ahijah the prophet is there, who told me that I would be king over this people.Also take with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him; he will tell you what will become of the child.”

When Ehud was dead, the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord.So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth Hagoyim.And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord; for Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he had harshly oppressed the children of Israel.Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time.And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

Therefore they inquired of the Lord further,“ Has the man come here yet?” And the Lord answered,“ There he is, hidden among the equipment.”

For behold, the kings assembled, They passed by together.They saw it, and so they marveled; They were troubled, they hastened away.Fear took hold of them there, And pain, as of a woman in birth pangs,As when You break the ships of Tarshish With an east wind.As we have heard, So we have seen In the city of the Lord of hosts, In the city of our God: God will establish it forever. Selah

But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite,“ Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them,‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’

Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem, and besieged it.In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was penetrated.

Then Zedekiah the king sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third entrance of the house of the Lord. And the king said to Jeremiah,“ I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me.”Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,“ If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you advice, you will not listen to me.”So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying,“ As the Lord lives, who made our very souls, I will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,“ Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel:‘ If you surely surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live; this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live.But if you do not surrender to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans; they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.’”And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah,“ I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they abuse me.”But Jeremiah said,“ They shall not deliver you. Please, obey the voice of the Lord which I speak to you. So it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live.But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word that the Lord has shown me:‘ Now behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be surrendered to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say:“ Your close friends have set upon you And prevailed against you; Your feet have sunk in the mire, And they have turned away again.”‘ so they shall surrender all your wives and children to the Chaldeans. You shall not escape from their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.’”Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,“ Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die.But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you,‘ Declare to us now what you have said to the king, and also what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death,’then you shall say to them,‘ I presented my request before the king, that he would not make me return to Jonathan’s house to die there.’”Then all the princes came to Jeremiah and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been heard.

“ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?“ Therefore speak to them, and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols,that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.”’“ Therefore say to the house of Israel,‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the Lord will answer him by Myself.

Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,O seed of Abraham His servant, You children of Jacob, His chosen ones!He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth.He remembers His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac,And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel as an everlasting covenant,Saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance,”When they were few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it.When they went from one nation to another, From one kingdom to another people,He permitted no one to do them wrong; Yes, He rebuked kings for their sakes,Saying,“ Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.”Moreover He called for a famine in the land; He destroyed all the provision of bread.He sent a man before them— Joseph— who was sold as a slave.They hurt his feet with fetters, He was laid in irons.Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the Lord tested him.The king sent and released him, The ruler of the people let him go free.He made him Lord of his house, And ruler of all his possessions,To bind his princes at his pleasure, And teach his elders wisdom.Israel also came into Egypt, And Jacob dwelt in the land of Ham.He increased His people greatly, And made them stronger than their enemies.He turned their heart to hate His people, To deal craftily with His servants.He sent Moses His servant, And Aaron whom He had chosen.They performed His signs among them, And wonders in the land of Ham.He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they did not rebel against His word.He turned their waters into blood, And killed their fish.Their land abounded with frogs, Even in the chambers of their kings.He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, And lice in all their territory.He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land.He struck their vines also, and their fig trees, And splintered the trees of their territory.He spoke, and locusts came, Young locusts without number,And ate up all the vegetation in their land, And devoured the fruit of their ground.He also destroyed all the firstborn in their land, The first of all their strength.He also brought them out with silver and gold, And there was none feeble among His tribes.Egypt was glad when they departed, For the fear of them had fallen upon them.He spread a cloud for a covering, And fire to give light in the night.The people asked, and He brought quail, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven.He opened the rock, and water gushed out; It ran in the dry places like a river.For He remembered His holy promise, And Abraham His servant.He brought out His people with joy, His chosen ones with gladness.He gave them the lands of the Gentiles, And they inherited the labor of the nations,That they might observe His statutes And keep His laws. Praise the Lord!

Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has made desolations in the earth.He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Now it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and encamped against it; and they built a siege wall against it all around.So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

Then David said to the Philistine,“ You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.”So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David.

‘ Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.

Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor,“ Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few.”So his armorbearer said to him,“ Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart.”Then Jonathan said,“ Very well, let us cross over to these men, and we will show ourselves to them.If they say thus to us,‘ Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place and not go up to them.But if they say thus,‘ Come up to us,’ then we will go up. For the Lord has delivered them into our hand, and this will be a sign to us.”So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said,“ Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden.”Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said,“ Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armorbearer,“ Come up after me, for the Lord has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them.That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land.

“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me, for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe.( She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her.

It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat.Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying,“ A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar”( which is En Gedi).And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court,and said:“ O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying,‘ If disaster comes upon us— sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine— we will stand before this temple and in Your presence( for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir— whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them—here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit.O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”Now all Judah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children, stood before the Lord.Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.And he said,“ Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you:‘ Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel.You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord.Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said,“ Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:“ Praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever.”Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much.And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah until this day.Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of the Lord.And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.

Now it came to pass when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it— as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king— and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were mighty.Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,“ Come up to me and help me, that we may attack Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.”Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together and went up, they and all their armies, and camped before Gibeon and made war against it.And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying,“ Do not forsake your servants; come up to us quickly, save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.”So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.And the Lord said to Joshua,“ Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.”Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly, having marched all night from Gilgal.So the Lord routed them before Israel, killed them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road that goes to Beth Horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.And it happened, as they fled before Israel and were on the descent of Beth Horon, that the Lord cast down large hailstones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died from the hailstones than the children of Israel killed with the sword.

Then Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.So Asa went out against him, and they set the troops in battle array in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said,“ Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”So the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar. So the Ethiopians were overthrown, and they could not recover, for they were broken before the Lord and His army. And they carried away very much spoil.

Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the Lord thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel.And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and drove them back as far as below Beth Car.Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying,“ Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:“ Speak to the children of Israel, that they turn and camp before Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, opposite Baal Zephon; you shall camp before it by the sea.For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel,‘ They are bewildered by the land; the wilderness has closed them in.’Then I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he will pursue them; and I will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.Now it was told the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people; and they said,“ Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”So he made ready his chariot and took his people with him.Also, he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt with captains over every one of them.And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel; and the children of Israel went out with boldness.So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon.And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.Then they said to Moses,“ Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying,‘ Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.”And Moses said to the people,“ Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”And the Lord said to Moses,“ Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.

‘ Look, the siege mounds! They have come to the city to take it; and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of the sword and famine and pestilence. What You have spoken has happened; there You see it!

And the king of Israel said to his servants,“ Do you know that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, but we hesitate to take it out of the hand of the king of Syria?”So he said to Jehoshaphat,“ Will you go with me to fight at Ramoth Gilead?” Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”Also Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel,“ Please inquire for the word of the Lord today.”Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them,“ Shall I go against Ramoth Gilead to fight, or shall I refrain?” So they said,“ Go up, for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.”And Jehoshaphat said,“ Is there not still a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of Him?”So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,“ Let not the king say such things!”

For because of the anger of the Lord this happened in Jerusalem and Judah, till He finally cast them out from His presence. Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.Now it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and encamped against it; and they built a siege wall against it all around.So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.By the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the famine had become so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

But Jehoshaphat said,“ Is there no prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?” So one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said,“ Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.”And Jehoshaphat said,“ The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.Then Elisha said to the king of Israel,“ What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.” But the king of Israel said to him,“ No, for the Lord has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”And Elisha said,“ As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you.

Then the Lord sent an angel who cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned shamefaced to his own land. And when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring struck him down with the sword there.
