I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me.

who cause a person to be indicted by a word, and lay a snare for the arbiter in the gate, and who deprive the innocent of justice with false testimony.

He who hides hatred has lying lips. He who utters a slander is a fool.

Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”I said,“ Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him; but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.He hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly angry, and to draw many things out of him;lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch him in something he might say, that they might accuse him.

Don’t go out into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and terror are on every side.

Then they secretly induced men to say,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and came against him and seized him, then brought him in to the council,and set up false witnesses who said,“ This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law.For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”All who sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face like it was the face of an angel.

Now the chief priests, the elders, and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death;and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward,

Say,‘ The king says,“ Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.”’”

But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were determined to kill them.

They watched him and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

The king said to the young lady,“ Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”He swore to her,“ Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”She went out, and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask?” She said,“ The head of John the Baptizer.”She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked,“ I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.”The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her.Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John’s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

After five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with certain elders and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Paul.When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying,“ Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that prosperity is coming to this nation by your foresight,we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.But that I don’t delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words.For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.He even tried to profane the temple, and we arrested him.

My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
