For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

For I have heard the gossip of many people,“ Terror is on every side! Report him; let’s report him!” Everyone I trusted watches for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived so that we might prevail against him and take our vengeance on him.”

For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, say all my familiar friends, they that watch for my fall; peradventure he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

For I hear the slander of many; Fear is on every side; While they take counsel together against me, They scheme to take away my life.

Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

Who make a man an offender by a word, And lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, And turn aside the just by empty words.

So come, therefore, and let us consult together.Then I sent to him, saying,“ No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.”For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying,“ Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done.” Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said,“ Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.”And I said,“ Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!”Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.

Do not go out into the field, Nor walk by the way. Because of the sword of the enemy, Fear is on every side.

And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.Now there were more than forty who had formed this conspiracy.They came to the chief priests and elders, and said,“ We have bound ourselves under a great oath that we will eat nothing until we have killed Paul.Now you, therefore, together with the council, suggest to the commander that he be brought down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to make further inquiries concerning him; but we are ready to kill him before he comes near.”

Then they secretly induced men to say,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.They also set up false witnesses who said,“ This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law;for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward

and say,‘ Thus says the king:“ Put this fellow in prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction, until I come in peace.”’”

When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.

So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,“ Let not the king say such things!”

Therefore Herodias held it against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not;for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he protected him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee.And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl,“ Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”He also swore to her,“ Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”So she went out and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask?” And she said,“ The head of John the Baptist!”Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying,“ I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison,brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.

So Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:

For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three.Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

Nor can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.

Now after five days Ananias the high priest came down with the elders and a certain orator named Tertullus. These gave evidence to the governor against Paul.And when he was called upon, Tertullus began his accusation, saying:“ Seeing that through you we enjoy great peace, and prosperity is being brought to this nation by your foresight,we accept it always and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.Nevertheless, not to be tedious to you any further, I beg you to hear, by your courtesy, a few words from us.For we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.He even tried to profane the temple, and we seized him, and wanted to judge him according to our law.

My soul is among lions; I lie among the sons of men Who are set on fire, Whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword.
