I hear many people whispering,“ There is terror on every side! Bring charges against Jeremiah! Let’s bring charges against him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip. They are saying,“ Perhaps he will be tricked into making a mistake. Then we’ll win out over him. We’ll get even with him.”

For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

For I hear many whispering,“ Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life.

Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.

those who with a word make someone out to be guilty, who ensnare the defender in court and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice.

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say,“ May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”

They said,“ Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”

Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers.They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear.

Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool.

All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.

He said,“ Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you.”But I said,“ Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,waiting to catch him in something he might say.

Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.

The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.More than forty men were involved in this plot.They went to the chief priests and the elders and said,“ We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.”

Then they secretly persuaded some men to say,“ We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.They produced false witnesses, who testified,“ This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward

and say,‘ This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.’”

When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the Lord, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”“ The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied.

So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”And he promised her with an oath,“ Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask for?”“ The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request:“ I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.

Ahab said to Elijah,“ So you have found me, my enemy!”“ I have found you,” he answered,“ because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord.

From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.

And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.

Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor.When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix:“ We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation.Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude.But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.“ We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sectand even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.

I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts— men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
