For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

For I have heard the gossip of many people,“ Terror is on every side! Report him; let’s report him!” Everyone I trusted watches for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived so that we might prevail against him and take our vengeance on him.”

For I heard many mocking:“ Fear on every side!”“ Report,” they say,“ and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,“ Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”

For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, say all my familiar friends, they that watch for my fall; peradventure he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

For I hear what so many are saying, the terrifying news that comes from every direction. When they plot together against me, they figure out how they can take my life.

Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared meals with me, has turned against me.

those who bear false testimony against a person, who entrap the one who arbitrates at the city gate and deprive the innocent of justice by making false charges.

Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,“ May the gods judge me severely if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”

Then some people said,“ Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers.They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge,in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation.

The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool.

All my closest friends detest me; and those whom I love have turned against me.

But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.We would share personal thoughts with each other; in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.

Slanderous men shed blood within you. Those who live within you eat pagan sacrifices on the mountains; they commit obscene acts among you.

So come on! Let’s talk about this.”I sent word back to him,“ We are not engaged in these activities you are describing. All of this is a figment of your imagination.”All of them were wanting to scare us, supposing,“ Their hands will grow slack from the work, and it won’t get done.” So now, strengthen my hands!Then I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel. He was confined to his home. He said,“ Let’s set up a time to meet in the house of God, within the temple. Let’s close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. It will surely be at night that they will come to kill you.”But I replied,“ Should a man like me run away? Would someone like me flee to the temple in order to save his life? I will not go!”I recognized the fact that God had not sent him, for he had spoken the prophecy against me as a hired agent of Tobiah and Sanballat.He had been hired to scare me so that I would do this and thereby sin. They would thus bring reproach on me and I would be discredited.

When he went out from there, the experts in the law and the Pharisees began to oppose him bitterly, and to ask him hostile questions about many things,plotting against him, to catch him in something he might say.

Do not go out into the countryside. Do not travel on the roads. For the enemy is there with sword in hand. They are spreading terror everywhere.”

When morning came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink anything until they had killed Paul.There were more than forty of them who formed this conspiracy.They went to the chief priests and the elders and said,“ We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to partake of anything until we have killed Paul.So now you and the council request the commanding officer to bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine his case by conducting a more thorough inquiry. We are ready to kill him before he comes near this place.”

Then they secretly instigated some men to say,“ We have heard this man speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.”They incited the people, the elders, and the experts in the law; then they approached Stephen, seized him, and brought him before the council.They brought forward false witnesses who said,“ This man does not stop saying things against this holy place and the law.For we have heard him saying that Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”All who were sitting in the council looked intently at Stephen and saw his face was like the face of an angel.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward

Say,‘ This is what the king says,“ Put this man in prison. Give him only a little bread and water until I safely return.”’”

Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them.

Then they watched him carefully and sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They wanted to take advantage of what he might say so that they could deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man through whom we can seek the LORD’s will. But I despise him because he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster. His name is Micaiah son of Imlah. Jehoshaphat said,“ The king should not say such things.”

So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could notbecause Herod stood in awe of John and protected him, since he knew that John was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, and yet he liked to listen to John.But a suitable day came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.”He swore to her,“ Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”So she went out and said to her mother,“ What should I ask for?” Her mother said,“ The head of John the baptizer.”Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request:“ I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.”Although it grieved the king deeply, he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.So the king sent an executioner at once to bring John’s head, and he went and beheaded John in prison.He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

When Elijah arrived, Ahab said to him,“ So, you have found me, my enemy!” Elijah replied,“ I have found you, because you are committed to doing evil in the sight of the LORD.

For from now on there will be five in one household divided, three against two and two against three.They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother- in- law against her daughter- in- law and daughter- in- law against mother- in- law.”

When they heard these things, they became furious and ground their teeth at him.

After five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they brought formal charges against Paul to the governor.When Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying,“ We have experienced a lengthy time of peace through your rule, and reforms are being made in this nation through your foresight.Most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this everywhere and in every way with all gratitude.But so that I may not delay you any further, I beg you to hear us briefly with your customary graciousness.For we have found this man to be a troublemaker, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.He even tried to desecrate the temple, so we arrested him.

I am surrounded by lions; I lie down among those who want to devour me; men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are a sharp sword.
