For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

Who cause a person to be indicted by a word, And set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate, And defraud the one in the right with meaningless arguments.

One who conceals hatred has lying lips, And one who spreads slander is a fool.

So come now, let’s consult together.”Then I sent a message to him saying,“ Nothing like these things that you are saying has been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.”For all of them were trying to frighten us, thinking,“ They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.” But now, God, strengthen my hands.When I entered the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined at home, he said,“ Let’s meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let’s close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you, and they are coming to kill you at night.”But I said,“ Should a man like me flee? And who is there like me who would go into the temple to save his own life? I will not go in.”Then I realized that God certainly had not sent him, but he uttered his prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.He was hired for this reason, that I would become frightened and act accordingly and sin, so that they might have an evil report in order that they could taunt me.

When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects,plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.

Do not go out into the field, And do not walk on the road; For the enemy has a sword, Terror is on every side.

When it was day, the Jews formed a conspiracy and put themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.There were more than forty who formed this plot.They came to the chief priests and the elders and said,“ We have put ourselves under an oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.Now therefore, you and the Council notify the commander to bring him down to you, as though you were going to investigate his case more thoroughly; and as for us, we are ready to kill him before he comes near the place.”

Then they secretly induced men to say,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him before the Council.They put forward false witnesses who said,“ This man does not stop speaking against this holy place and the Law;for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses handed down to us.”And all who were sitting in the Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

Now the chief priests and the entire Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward,

and say,‘ This is what the king says:“ Put this man in prison, and feed him enough bread and water to survive until I return safely.” ’ ”

But when they heard this, they became infuriated and nearly decided to execute them.

And so they watched Him closely, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could hand Him over to the jurisdiction and authority of the governor.

And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him, because he does not prophesy anything good regarding me, but only bad. He is Micaiah the son of Imlah.” But Jehoshaphat said,“ May the king not say so.”

And Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death, and could not do so;for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he had been protecting him. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; and yet he used to enjoy listening to him.An opportune day came when Herod, on his birthday, held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders, and the leading people of Galilee;and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl,“ Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”And he swore to her,“ Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.”And she went out and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask for?” And she said,“ The head of John the Baptist.”Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying,“ I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”And although the king was very sorry, because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison,and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.

Then Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, enemy of mine?” And he answered,“ I have found you, because you have given yourself over to do evil in the sight of the Lord.

for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother in law against daughter in law and daughter in law against mother in law.”

Now when they heard this, they were infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him.

Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.

Now after five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they brought charges against Paul to the governor.After Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began accusing him, saying to the governor,“ Since we have attained great peace through you, and since reforms are being carried out for this nation by your foresight,we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.But, that I may not weary you further, I beg you to grant us a brief hearing, by your kindness.For we have found this man a public menace and one who stirs up dissensions among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.And he even tried to desecrate the temple, so indeed we arrested him.

My soul is among lions; I must lie among those who devour, Among sons of mankind whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue is a sharp sword.
