“ In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.

“ I punished your people. But it did not do them any good. They did not pay attention when they were corrected. You have killed your prophets by swords. You have swallowed them up like a hungry lion.

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

“ I have punished your children, but they did not respond to my discipline. You yourselves have killed your prophets as a lion kills its prey.

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, and you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;

Where will you be stricken again, As you continue in your rebellion? The entire head is sick And the entire heart is faint.

Lord, do Your eyes not look for honesty? You have struck them, But they did not weaken; You have consumed them, But they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than rock; They have refused to repent.

And you shall say to them,‘ This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept discipline; trustworthiness has perished and has been eliminated from their mouth.

Yet the people do not turn back to Him who struck them, Nor do they seek the Lord of armies.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands so as not to worship demons and the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk;and they did not repent of their murders, nor of their witchcraft, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

So they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the house of the Lord.

And he said,“ I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of armies; for the sons of Israel have abandoned Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they have sought to take my life.”

In your filthiness is outrageous sin. Because I would have cleansed you, Yet you are not clean, You will not be cleansed from your filthiness again Until I have expended My wrath on you.

but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Nevertheless I must go on My journey today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a prophet would perish outside Jerusalem.Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them.

She obeyed no voice, She accepted no discipline. She did not trust in the Lord, She did not approach her God.

And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine growers, in order to receive his share of the produce of the vineyard from the vine growers.And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty handed.And again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.He had one more man to send, a beloved son; he sent him to them last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those vine growers said to one another,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’And they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

The bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; In vain the refining goes on, But the wicked are not separated.They call them rejected silver, Because the Lord has rejected them.

I have certainly heard Ephraim grieving,‘ You have disciplined me, and I was corrected, Like an untrained calf; Bring me back that I may be restored, For You are the Lord my God.

Now during the time of his distress, this same King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the Lord.

Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.For this reason also, the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’

And the people were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory.
