“ In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.

“ I punished your people. But it did not do them any good. They did not pay attention when they were corrected. You have killed your prophets by swords. You have swallowed them up like a hungry lion.

“ I have punished your children, but they did not respond to my discipline. You yourselves have killed your prophets as a lion kills its prey.

I have struck down your children in vain; they would not accept discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a ravaging lion.

There was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.

And you shall say to them,‘ This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

The people did not turn to him who struck them, nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk,nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord.

He said,“ I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”

But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy.

And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them.

She listens to no voice; she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord; she does not draw near to her God.

When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully.And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed.He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those tenants said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.

The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain the refining goes on, for the wicked are not removed.Rejected silver they are called, for the Lord has rejected them.”

I have heard Ephraim grieving,‘ You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like an untrained calf; bring me back that I may be restored, for you are the Lord my God.

In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord— this same King Ahaz.

Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.Therefore also the Wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
