Excuses might be found for a thief who steals because he is starving.But if he is caught, he must pay back seven times what he stole, even if he has to sell everything in his house.

You will be ashamed of your idol worship in groves of sacred oaks. You will blush because you worshiped in gardens dedicated to idols.

We have refused to listen to your servants the prophets, who spoke on your authority to our kings and princes and ancestors and to all the people of the land.“ Lord, you are in the right; but as you see, our faces are covered with shame. This is true of all of us, including the people of Judah and Jerusalem and all Israel, scattered near and far, wherever you have driven us because of our disloyalty to you.O Lord, we and our kings, princes, and ancestors are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.

From childhood we have watched as everything our ancestors worked for— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters— was squandered on a delusion.Let us now lie down in shame and cover ourselves with dishonor, for we and our ancestors have sinned against the Lord our God. And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.

Did you not ridicule the people of Israel? Were they caught in the company of thieves that you should despise them as you do?

First here, then there— you flit from one ally to another asking for help. But your new friends in Egypt will let you down, just as Assyria did before.
