爾今或往埃及、飲西曷之水、或往亞述、飲百辣之水、果何為哉。

爾今何為往伊及之路、欲飲西曷之水乎、爾何為往亞述之路、欲飲伯拉大河之水乎、

從埃及前的西曷河往北，直到以革倫的境界，就算屬迦南人之地。有非利士人五個首領所管的迦薩人、亞實突人、亞實基倫人、迦特人、以革倫人之地，並有南方亞衛人之地。

以法蓮好像鴿子愚蠢無知；他們求告埃及，投奔亞述。

禍哉！那些下埃及求幫助的，是因仗賴馬匹，倚靠甚多的車輛，並倚靠強壯的馬兵，卻不仰望以色列的聖者，也不求問耶和華。

你為何東跑西奔要更換你的路呢？你必因埃及蒙羞，像從前因亞述蒙羞一樣。

法老的軍隊已經從埃及出來，那圍困耶路撒冷的迦勒底人聽見他們的風聲，就拔營離開耶路撒冷去了。耶和華的話臨到先知耶利米說：「耶和華－以色列的神如此說：猶大王打發你們來求問我，你們要如此對他說：『那出來幫助你們法老的軍隊必回埃及本國去。迦勒底人必再來攻打這城，並要攻取，用火焚燒。耶和華如此說：你們不要自欺說「迦勒底人必定離開我們」，因為他們必不離開。你們即便殺敗了與你們爭戰的迦勒底全軍，但剩下受傷的人也必各人從帳棚裏起來，用火焚燒這城。』」

以法蓮見自己有病，猶大見自己有傷，他們就打發人往亞述去見耶雷布王，他卻不能醫治你們，不能治好你們的傷。

亞述王提革拉‧毗列色上來，卻沒有幫助他，反倒欺凌他。亞哈斯從耶和華殿裏和王宮中，並首領家內所取的財寶給了亞述王，這也無濟於事。

我們仰望人來幫助，以致眼目失明，還是枉然；我們所盼望的，竟盼望一個不能救人的國！

他卻背叛巴比倫王，打發使者往埃及去，要他們給他馬匹和多民。他豈能亨通呢？行這樣事的人豈能逃脫呢？他背約豈能逃脫呢？

亞哈斯差遣使者去見亞述王提革拉‧毗列色，說：「我是你的僕人、你的兒子。現在亞蘭王和以色列王攻擊我，求你來救我脫離他們的手。」亞哈斯將耶和華殿裏和王宮府庫裏所有的金銀都送給亞述王為禮物。亞述王應允了他，就上去攻打大馬士革，將城攻取，殺了利汛，把居民擄到吉珥。

耶和華說：禍哉！這悖逆的兒女。他們同謀，卻不由於我，結盟，卻不由於我的靈，以致罪上加罪；起身下埃及去，並沒有求問我；要靠法老的力量加添自己的力量，並投在埃及的蔭下。所以，法老的力量必作你們的羞辱；投在埃及的蔭下，要為你們的慚愧。他們的首領已在瑣安；他們的使臣到了哈內斯。他們必因那不利於他們的民蒙羞。那民並非幫助，也非利益，只作羞恥凌辱。論南方牲畜的默示：他們把財物馱在驢駒的脊背上，將寶物馱在駱駝的肉鞍上，經過艱難困苦之地，就是公獅、母獅、蝮蛇、火焰的飛龍之地，往那不利於他們的民那裏去。埃及的幫助是徒然無益的；所以我稱她為「坐而不動的拉哈伯」。
