They said,“ Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah; for the teaching of the law by the priest will not cease, nor will counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophets. So come, let’s attack him with our tongues and pay no attention to anything he says.”

彼曰、其來、爾我同謀以攻耶利米、因法律不絕於祭司、謀畧不絕於哲人、預言不絕於先知、來哉、我儕以舌攻之、勿聽其言、○

人曰、祭司有律例、智士有箴規、先知有預言、如耶利米其言不可信、予當批其頰、而謀害之。

彼眾曰、我儕不如設謀、坑害耶利米、攻之以詞、勿聽其所言、蓋祭司非失律法、智者非缺謀略、先知非無預言、

They said,“ Come on. Let’s make plans against Jeremiah. We’ll still have priests to teach us the law. We’ll always have wise people to give us advice. We’ll have prophets to bring us messages from the Lord. So come on. Let’s speak out against Jeremiah. We shouldn’t pay any attention to what he says.”

Then they said,“ Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

Then the people said,“ Come on, let’s plot a way to stop Jeremiah. We have plenty of priests and wise men and prophets. We don’t need him to teach the word and give us advice and prophecies. Let’s spread rumors about him and ignore what he says.”

Then certain ones said,“ Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will never be lost from the priest, or counsel from the wise, or a word from the prophet. Come, let’s denounce him and pay no attention to all his words.”

Then they said,“ Come and let’s devise plans against Jeremiah. Certainly the Law is not going to be lost by the priest, nor advice by the wise, nor the divine word by the prophet! Come, and let’s strike at him with our tongue, and let’s pay no attention to any of his words.”

Then they said,“ Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come and let us attack him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.”

Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

Then some people said,“ Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

Then they said,“ Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”

You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor.

I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying,“ Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.”

Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.

“ For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.

They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts— men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.

Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud people of their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.Therefore, the Lord says:“ I am planning disaster against this people, from which you cannot save yourselves. You will no longer walk proudly, for it will be a time of calamity.

The priests did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.

Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

then tell them,‘ This is what the Lord says: I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem.I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the Lord. I will allow no pity or mercy or compassion to keep me from destroying them.’”

He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.

“ Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem,‘ This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’

Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face.“ Which way did the spirit from the Lord go when he went from me to speak to you?” he asked.

Scoundrels use wicked methods, they make up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.

Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah,“ You are lying! The Lord our God has not sent you to say,‘ You must not go to Egypt to settle there.’

Now David had been told,“ Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed,“ Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”

and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.”

Then the Lord said to me,“ The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying,‘ No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons and their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.

They have lied about the Lord; they said,“ He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine.The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them.”

One of the experts in the law answered him,“ Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

“ This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah,‘ The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac who acts like a prophet into the stocks and neck-irons.So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you?He has sent this message to us in Babylon: It will be a long time. Therefore build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’”Zephaniah the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet.

“ You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.“ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law— there is a curse on them.”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked,“ What? Are we blind too?”

We will certainly do everything we said we would: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and will pour out drink offerings to her just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and were well off and suffered no harm.

Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people,“ This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears!”
