There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt,and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand.As he came from his mother’s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand.This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.”But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the Lord of hosts.“ As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear,” says the Lord of hosts,

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them away; they oppress a man and his house, a man and his inheritance.

On that day I will punish everyone who leaps over the threshold, and those who fill their master’s house with violence and fraud.

They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.

But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

“ Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbor serve him for nothing and does not give him his wages,

A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him.

Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,“ Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own— for how long?— and loads himself with pledges!”Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them.Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.“ Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm!You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life.For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the woodwork respond.“ Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity!

I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”

Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

Like a cage full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great and rich;they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.“ Behold, I strike my hand at the dishonest gain that you have made, and at the blood that has been in your midst.

The women of my people you drive out from their delightful houses; from their young children you take away my splendor forever.

Can I forget any longer the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is accursed?Shall I acquit the man with wicked scales and with a bag of deceitful weights?Your rich men are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors.

“ Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

A merchant, in whose hands are false balances, he loves to oppress.Ephraim has said,“ Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”

Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well; the prince and the judge ask for a bribe, and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul; thus they weave it together.

“ They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,“ those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.

Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow’s cause does not come to them.Therefore the Lord declares, the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:“ Ah, I will get relief from my enemies and avenge myself on my foes.

They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end,saying,“ When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances,that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
