I will stand at the city gates of the land. I will separate the straw from the grain. I will destroy my people. I will bring great sorrow on them. They have not changed their ways.

You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up, and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the Lord and glory in the Holy One of Israel.

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

“ Say to them,‘ This is what the Lord says:“‘ When people fall down, do they not get up? When someone turns away, do they not return?Why then have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.

Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says:‘ Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.

“ And you, son of man, on the day I take away their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes, their heart’s desire, and their sons and daughters as well—

At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told,“ A scorching wind from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse;a wind too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments against them.”

“ I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the Lord.“ I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the Lord.“ Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, Israel, prepare to meet your God.”

You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.

Say to the people of Israel,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to desecrate my sanctuary— the stronghold in which you take pride, the delight of your eyes, the object of your affection. The sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.

The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand.

Death has climbed in through our windows and has entered our fortresses; it has removed the children from the streets and the young men from the public squares.

Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children,and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.The most gentle and sensitive woman among you— so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot— will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter
