You have abandoned me and turned your back on me,” says the Lord.“ Therefore, I will raise my fist to destroy you. I am tired of always giving you another chance.

I, the LORD, say:‘ You people have deserted me! You keep turning your back on me.’ So I have unleashed my power against you and have begun to destroy you. I have grown tired of feeling sorry for you!”

You have rejected me,” says Yahweh.“ You have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am weary of showing compassion.

“ But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward.

“ I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear.

“ Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing.

Oh, what a sinful nation they are— loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.

“ Should I ransom them from the grave? Should I redeem them from death? O death, bring on your terrors! O grave, bring on your plagues! For I will not take pity on them.

So now I am filled with the Lord’s fury. Yes, I am tired of holding it in!“ I will pour out my fury on children playing in the streets and on gatherings of young men, on husbands and wives and on those who are old and gray.

I will raise my fist of judgment against you. I will give you as plunder to many nations. I will cut you off from being a nation and destroy you completely. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Then this message came to me from the Lord:“ Son of man, the people of Israel are saying,‘ He’s talking about the distant future. His visions won’t come true for a long, long time.’Therefore, tell them,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No more delay! I will now do everything I have threatened. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!’”

Listen, all the earth! I will bring disaster on my people. It is the fruit of their own schemes, because they refuse to listen to me. They have rejected my word.

So the Lord will spell out his message for them again, one line at a time, one line at a time, a little here, and a little there, so that they will stumble and fall. They will be injured, trapped, and captured.

And you have brought this upon yourselves by rebelling against the Lord your God, even though he was leading you on the way!

Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times he held back his anger and did not unleash his fury!For he remembered that they were merely mortal, gone like a breath of wind that never returns.Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland.

Then why do these people stay on their self destructive path? Why do the people of Jerusalem refuse to turn back? They cling tightly to their lies and will not turn around.

I will pronounce judgment on my people for all their evil— for deserting me and burning incense to other gods. Yes, they worship idols made with their own hands!

“‘ And if a prophet is deceived into giving a message, it is because I, the Lord, have deceived that prophet. I will lift my fist against such prophets and cut them off from the community of Israel.

“ For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!

So the Lord relented from this plan.“ I will not do it,” he said.Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. I saw him preparing to punish his people with a great fire. The fire had burned up the depths of the sea and was devouring the entire land.Then I said,“ O Sovereign Lord, please stop or we will not survive, for Israel is so small.”Then the Lord relented from this plan, too.“ I will not do that either,” said the Sovereign Lord.Then he showed me another vision. I saw the Lord standing beside a wall that had been built using a plumb line. He was using a plumb line to see if it was still straight.And the Lord said to me,“ Amos, what do you see?” I answered,“ A plumb line.” And the Lord replied,“ I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.

Israel is stubborn, like a stubborn heifer. So should the Lord feed her like a lamb in a lush pasture?

But if I say I’ll never mention the Lord or speak in his name, his word burns in my heart like a fire. It’s like a fire in my bones! I am worn out trying to hold it in! I can’t do it!

Your wickedness will bring its own punishment. Your turning from me will shame you. You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the Lord your God and not to fear him. I, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!
