Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

I said,“ Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

“ If you lend money to any of My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not charge him interest.

O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me.For when I spoke, I cried out; I shouted,“ Violence and plunder!” Because the word of the Lord was made to me A reproach and a derision daily.

For behold, I have made you this day A fortified city and an iron pillar, And bronze walls against the whole land— Against the kings of Judah, Against its princes, Against its priests, And against the people of the land.They will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you,” says the Lord,“ to deliver you.”

He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze wall; And they will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you; For I am with you to save you And deliver you,” says the Lord.

After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.And Job spoke, and said:“ May the day perish on which I was born, And the night in which it was said,‘ A male child is conceived.’May that day be darkness; May God above not seek it, Nor the light shine upon it.May darkness and the shadow of death claim it; May a cloud settle on it; May the blackness of the day terrify it.As for that night, may darkness seize it; May it not rejoice among the days of the year, May it not come into the number of the months.Oh, may that night be barren! May no joyful shout come into it!May those curse it who curse the day, Those who are ready to arouse Leviathan.May the stars of its morning be dark; May it look for light, but have none, And not see the dawning of the day;Because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, Nor hide sorrow from my eyes.“ Why did I not die at birth? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?For now I would have lain still and been quiet, I would have been asleep; Then I would have been at restWith kings and counselors of the earth, Who built ruins for themselves,Or with princes who had gold, Who filled their houses with silver;Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, Like infants who never saw light?There the wicked cease from troubling, And there the weary are at rest.There the prisoners rest together; They do not hear the voice of the oppressor.The small and great are there, And the servant is free from his master.“ Why is light given to him who is in misery, And life to the bitter of soul,Who long for death, but it does not come, And search for it more than hidden treasures;Who rejoice exceedingly, And are glad when they can find the grave?Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, And whom God has hedged in?For my sighing comes before I eat, And my groanings pour out like water.For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me.I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, for trouble comes.”

“ And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you dwell among scorpions; do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their looks, though they are a rebellious house.You shall speak My words to them, whether they hear or whether they refuse, for they are rebellious.

And they brought them to the magistrates, and said,“ These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city;and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.”Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods.

Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So a curse without cause shall not alight.

So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,“ Let not the king say such things!”

So Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” And he answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of the Lord:

Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him,“ Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”And he answered,“ I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals.

For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored!To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless.And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure;being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

“ You shall not charge interest to your brother— interest on money or food or anything that is lent out at interest.To a foreigner you may charge interest, but to your brother you shall not charge interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all to which you set your hand in the land which you are entering to possess.

Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother,“ Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against

Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake.

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

Cursed be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!Let the man be cursed Who brought news to my father, saying,“ A male child has been born to you!” Making him very glad.And let that man be like the cities Which the Lord overthrew, and did not relent; Let him hear the cry in the morning And the shouting at noon,Because he did not kill me from the womb, That my mother might have been my grave, And her womb always enlarged with me.Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow, That my days should be consumed with shame?

He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said:“ Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade.Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying,“ Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect, we know that it is spoken against everywhere.”

But the house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to Me; for all the house of Israel are impudent and hard-hearted.Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads.Like adamant stone, harder than flint, I have made your forehead; do not be afraid of them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.”

“ Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.

Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech, That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!My soul has dwelt too longWith one who hates peace.

And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God.But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

“ Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you.

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out,“ These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king— Jesus.”And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, let them be ashamed, But let Your servant rejoice.

And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren.For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”There were also some who said,“ We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine.”There were also those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.
