Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

I said,“ Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me, a man of strife, and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them curses me.

“ If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him.

O Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me.For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout,“ Violence and destruction!” For the word of the Lord has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.

And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”

who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the Lord.

After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.And Job said:“ Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said,‘ A man is conceived.’Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it.Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.That night— let thick darkness seize it! Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.Behold, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry enter it.Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none, nor see the eyelids of the morning,because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.“ Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire?Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?For then I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept; then I would have been at rest,with kings and counselors of the earth who rebuilt ruins for themselves,or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.Or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child, as infants who never see the light?There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest.There the prisoners are at ease together; they hear not the voice of the taskmaster.The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.“ Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul,who long for death, but it comes not, and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,who rejoice exceedingly and are glad when they find the grave?Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?For my sighing comes instead of my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water.For the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me.I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest, but trouble comes.”

And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house.

And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said,“ These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city.They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice.”The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods.

Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.

And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micaiah the son of Imlah, but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,“ Let not the king say so.”

Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord.

When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,“ Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”And he answered,“ I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals.

For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless,and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure;when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.

“ You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,“ Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed

“ Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!

But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Cursed be the day on which I was born! The day when my mother bore me, let it not be blessed!Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,“ A son is born to you,” making him very glad.Let that man be like the cities that the Lord overthrew without pity; let him hear a cry in the morning and an alarm at noon,because he did not kill me in the womb; so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb forever great.Why did I come out from the womb to see toil and sorrow, and spend my days in shame?

These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said,“ Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.”

But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me: because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart.Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads.Like emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.”

“ Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake.

Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar!Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace.

And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.

Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you.

And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting,“ These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things.

Let them curse, but you will bless! They arise and are put to shame, but your servant will be glad!

Now there arose a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.For there were those who said,“ With our sons and our daughters, we are many. So let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive.”There were also those who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine.”And there were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.
