Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

My mother, I wish I had never been born! The whole land opposes me. They fight against me. I haven’t made loans to anyone. And I haven’t borrowed anything. But everyone curses me anyway.

Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

Then I said,“ What sorrow is mine, my mother. Oh, that I had died at birth! I am hated everywhere I go. I am neither a lender who threatens to foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to pay— yet they all curse me.”

I said,“ Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

If thou lend money to any of my people with thee that is poor, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest.

O Jehovah, thou hast persuaded me, and I was persuaded; thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am become a laughing- stock all the day, every one mocketh me.For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and destruction! because the word of Jehovah is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day.

For, behold, I have made thee this day a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee, saith Jehovah, to deliver thee.

He that putteth not out his money to interest, Nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

And I will make thee unto this people a fortified brazen wall; and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith Jehovah.

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day.And Job answered and said:Let the day perish wherein I was born, And the night which said, There is a man- child conceived.Let that day be darkness; Let not God from above seek for it, Neither let the light shine upon it.Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; Let a cloud dwell upon it; Let all that maketh black the day terrify it.As for that night, let thick darkness seize upon it: Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; Let it not come into the number of the months.Lo, let that night be barren; Let no joyful voice come therein.Let them curse it that curse the day, Who are ready to rouse up leviathan.Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark: Let it look for light, but have none; Neither let it behold the eyelids of the morning:Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, Nor hid trouble from mine eyes.Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost when my mother bare me?Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should suck?For now should I have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept; then had I been at rest,With kings and counsellors of the earth, Who built up waste places for themselves;Or with princes that had gold, Who filled their houses with silver:Or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, As infants that never saw light.There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary are at rest.There the prisoners are at ease together; They hear not the voice of the taskmaster.The small and the great are there: And the servant is free from his master.Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, And life unto the bitter in soul;Who long for death, but it cometh not, And dig for it more than for hid treasures;Who rejoice exceedingly, And are glad, when they can find the grave?Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, And whom God hath hedged in?For my sighing cometh before I eat, And my groanings are poured out like water.For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; But trouble cometh.

And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear; for they are most rebellious.

and when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.

As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.

And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Jehovah, Micaiah the son of Imlah: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah.

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.

For, I think, God hath set forth us the apostles last of all, as men doomed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, both to angels and men.We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye have glory, but we have dishonor.Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling- place;and we toil, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure;being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.

Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother; interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of anything that is lent upon interest.Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest, that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against;

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man- child is born unto thee; making him very glad.And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime;because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth.And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands:and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me: for all the house of Israel are of hard forehead and of a stiff heart.Behold, I have made thy face hard against their faces, and thy forehead hard against their foreheads.As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.

Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name’s sake.

Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!My soul hath long had her dwelling With him that hateth peace.

And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone through the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

Take thou no interest of him or increase, but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.

And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;whom Jason hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.And they troubled the multitude and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

Let them curse, but bless thou: When they arise, they shall be put to shame, But thy servant shall rejoice.

Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get grain, that we may eat and live.Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth.There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute upon our fields and our vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.
