巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒使猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅和猶大的首領跟匠人、鐵匠、從耶路撒冷流亡去，給帶到巴比倫：這事以後，永恆主給我看個異象：看哪，有兩筐無花果，放在永恆主的殿堂前。一筐是極好的無花果，好像首先熟的無花果；一筐是極壞的無花果，壞到喫不得。於是永恆主問我說：『耶利米啊，你看見甚麼？』我說：『我看見無花果，那好的無花果好極啦，那壞的壞極啦，壞到喫不得。』永恆主的話就傳與我說：『永恆主以色列的上帝這麼說：猶大流亡的人、我所打發離開這地方到迦勒底人之地去的、我必看他們好，如同這些好的無花果。我必注目好待他們，領他們返回這地；建立他們，必不傾覆；栽植他們，必不拔除。我必賜給他們一種心能認識我，知道我是永恆主；他們必做我的子民，我呢、必做他們的上帝，因為他們必全心全意地回轉來歸向我。『但是永恆主這麼說：我必將猶大王西底家和眾首領、以及耶路撒冷的餘民、剩在這地的、和住在埃及地的、都看像那壞的無花果，壞到喫不得的。

那上頭有木料可以取來作工具麼？或者人可以從那上頭取橛子來掛甚麼器皿麼？看哪，已拋給火燒燬，火既燒燬了兩頭，中間也給燒焦了，要作工具還有用處麼？看哪，它完整時、尚且不能用作工具，何況火燒燬了它，並且給燒焦了，還能用來作工具麼？

當時約書亞穿着污穢的衣服站在使者面前。使者應聲吩咐那些待立在他面前的說：『你們要脫去他污穢的衣服。』又對約書亞說：『看哪，我使你的罪孽離開了你，要給你穿上華麗的吉服。』

這壞人民、不肯聽我的話、只隨着自己頑強之心意而行，去隨從別的神、而事奉敬拜的，讓他們像這圍腰服毫無用處罷！

從前於你沒有用處、而如今於你於我都有用處的、求你。
