“鹽本來是好的，但如果失了味，怎能使它再鹹呢？或用在田裡，或放在糞裡，都不合適；只好扔在外面。有耳可聽的，就應當聽。”

巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒把猶大王約雅敬的兒子耶哥尼雅，和猶大的眾領袖、工匠與鐵匠從耶路撒冷擄到巴比倫去。這事以後，耶和華使我看見在耶和華的殿前面擺著兩筐無花果。一筐是極好的無花果，像初熟的無花果；另一筐是極壞的無花果，壞到不能吃。於是耶和華問我：“耶利米啊，你看見甚麼？”我回答：“我看見無花果。那些好的無花果極好，壞的卻極壞，壞到不能吃。”耶和華的話臨到我，說：“耶和華以色列的神這樣說：‘被擄去的猶大人，就是我打發離開這地方到迦勒底人之地去的，我必看他們如同這些好的無花果一樣，眷顧他們。我必關注他們，眷顧他們，領他們歸回這地。我必建立他們，必不拆毀；我必栽植他們，必不拔除。我必賜給他們一顆認識我的心，知道我就是耶和華；他們要作我的子民，我要親自作他們的神，因為他們必一心歸向我。’”“但耶和華這樣說：‘我怎樣處置那些壞到不能吃的壞無花果，我也必照樣對待猶大王西底家、他的眾領袖和耶路撒冷的餘民，不論是餘剩在這地的，或是住在埃及地的。

人可以從葡萄樹上取木料製造物件嗎？可以從葡萄樹上取木料做釘子掛器皿嗎？看哪！已經拋在火裡當作燃料，火既燒毀了兩端，連中間也燒焦了，它還可以用來製造物件嗎？看哪！它完整的時候，尚且不能用來製造物件，何況它被火燒毀和燒焦了，它還能用來做甚麼呢？”

那時，約書亞穿著污穢的衣服，站在使者的面前。使者吩咐那些侍立在他面前的說：“你們要脫去他污穢的衣服。”又對約書亞說：“看哪！我已經除去了你的罪孽，要給你穿上華美的禮服。”

這邪惡的人民，不肯聽從我的話，他們隨著自己頑梗的心行事，隨從別的神，事奉敬拜他們；所以他們必像這根腰帶，毫無用處。

他從前對你沒有甚麼好處，但現在對你我都有好處。
