How long must this land mourn? Even the grass in the fields has withered. The wild animals and birds have disappeared because of the evil in the land. For the people have said,“ The Lord doesn’t see what’s ahead for us!”

How long is the land to mourn, And the vegetation of the countryside to dry up? Due to the wickedness of those who live in it, Animals and birds have been snatched away, Because people have said,“ He will not see our final end.”

I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains, And for the dwelling places of the wilderness a lamentation, Because they are burned up, So that no one can pass through; Nor can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; They are gone.

I beheld, and indeed there was no man, And all the birds of the heavens had fled.

Therefore the land will mourn; And everyone who dwells there will waste away With the beasts of the field And the birds of the air; Even the fish of the sea will be taken away.

For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.

For the land is full of adulterers; For because of a curse the land mourns. The pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up. Their course of life is evil, And their might is not right.

A fruitful land into barrenness, For the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“ Behold, My anger and My fury will be poured out on this place— on man and on beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. And it will burn and not be quenched.”

The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

The field is wasted, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine is dried up, The oil fails.Be ashamed, you farmers, Wail, you vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field has perished.The vine has dried up, And the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate tree, The palm tree also, And the apple tree— All the trees of the field are withered; Surely joy has withered away from the sons of men.Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; Wail, you who minister before the altar; Come, lie all night in sackcloth, You who minister to my God; For the grain offering and the drink offering Are withheld from the house of your God.Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; Gather the elders And all the inhabitants of the land Into the house of the Lord your God, And cry out to the Lord.Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is at hand; It shall come as destruction from the Almighty.Is not the food cut off before our eyes, Joy and gladness from the house of our God?The seed shrivels under the clods, Storehouses are in shambles; Barns are broken down, For the grain has withered.

Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls—

And the prophets become wind, For the word is not in them. Thus shall it be done to them.”

These things you have done, and I kept silent; You thought that I was altogether like you; But I will rebuke you, And set them in order before your eyes.

For this shall the earth mourn, And the heavens above be black, Because I have spoken. I have purposed and will not relent, Nor will I turn back from it.

“ And you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD to the land of Israel:‘ An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.Now the end has come upon you, And I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways, And I will repay you for all your abominations.My eye will not spare you, Nor will I have pity; But I will repay your ways, And your abominations will be in your midst; Then you shall know that I am the Lord!’“ Thus says the Lord GOD:‘ A disaster, a singular disaster; Behold, it has come!An end has come, The end has come; It has dawned for you; Behold, it has come!Doom has come to you, you who dwell in the land; The time has come, A day of trouble is near, And not of rejoicing in the mountains.Now upon you I will soon pour out My fury, And spend My anger upon you; I will judge you according to your ways, And I will repay you for all your abominations.‘ My eye will not spare, Nor will I have pity; I will repay you according to your ways, And your abominations will be in your midst. Then you shall know that I am the Lord who strikes.‘ Behold, the day! Behold, it has come! Doom has gone out; The rod has blossomed, Pride has budded.Violence has risen up into a rod of wickedness; None of them shall remain, None of their multitude, None of them; Nor shall there be wailing for them.The time has come, The day draws near.‘ Let not the buyer rejoice, Nor the seller mourn, For wrath is on their whole multitude.For the seller shall not return to what has been sold, Though he may still be alive; For the vision concerns the whole multitude, And it shall not turn back; No one will strengthen himself Who lives in iniquity.

“ Judah mourns, And her gates languish; They mourn for the land, And the cry of Jerusalem has gone up.
