Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands”—

The Lord says,“ Jeremiah, here is what I am telling you about the people of Anathoth. They say they’re going to kill you. They are saying,‘ Don’t prophesy in the Lord’ s name. If you do, we will kill you with our own hands.’ ”

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—

This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said,“ We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.”

Therefore, here is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who intend to take your life. They warn,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, so that you do not die by our hand”;

Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Thou shalt not prophesy in the name of Jehovah, that thou die not by our hand;

Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth who want to take your life. They warn,“ You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:

Then the LORD told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened,“ Stop prophesying in the name of the LORD or we will kill you!”

“ Therefore Yahweh says concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying,‘ You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name, that you not die by our hand;’

Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

For I heard many mocking:“ Fear on every side!”“ Report,” they say,“ and we will report it!” All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,“ Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”

Who say to the seers,“ Do not see,” And to the prophets,“ Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.

“ If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, Then how can you contend with horses? And if in the land of peace, In which you trusted, they wearied you, Then how will you do in the floodplain of the Jordan?For even your brothers, the house of your father, Even they have dealt treacherously with you; Yes, they have called a multitude after you. Do not believe them, Even though they speak smooth words to you.

“ But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink, And commanded the prophets saying,‘ Do not prophesy!’

And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them.

Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying,“ You will surely die!

And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another.

Then He said,“ Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.

“ You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,

Now Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,“ Thus says the Lord:‘ He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’Thus says the Lord:‘ This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.’”Therefore the princes said to the king,“ Please, let this man be put to death, for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm.”Then Zedekiah the king said,“ Look, he is in your hand. For the king can do nothing against you.”So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

Now Pashhur the son of Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.

For son dishonors father, Daughter rises against her mother, Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; A man’s enemies are the men of his own household.

“ Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.

“ Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.For I have come to‘ set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’;and‘ a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’

But never again prophesy at Bethel, For it is the king’s sanctuary, And it is the royal residence.”Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah:“ I was no prophet, Nor was I a son of a prophet, But I was a sheepbreeder And a tender of sycamore fruit.Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock, And the Lord said to me,‘ Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’Now therefore, hear the word of the Lord: You say,‘ Do not prophesy against Israel, And do not spout against the house of Isaac.’

“ Do not prattle,” you say to those who prophesy. So they shall not prophesy to you; They shall not return insult for insult.You who are named the house of Jacob:“ Is the Spirit of the Lord restricted? Are these His doings? Do not My words do good To him who walks uprightly?“ Lately My people have risen up as an enemy— You pull off the robe with the garment From those who trust you, as they pass by, Like men returned from war.The women of My people you cast out From their pleasant houses; From their children You have taken away My glory forever.“ Arise and depart, For this is not your rest; Because it is defiled, it shall destroy, Yes, with utter destruction.If a man should walk in a false spirit And speak a lie, saying,‘ I will prophesy to you of wine and drink,’ Even he would be the prattler of this people.
