Therefore this is what the Lord says about the people of Anathoth who are threatening to kill you, saying,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord or you will die by our hands”—

The Lord says,“ Jeremiah, here is what I am telling you about the people of Anathoth. They say they’re going to kill you. They are saying,‘ Don’t prophesy in the Lord’ s name. If you do, we will kill you with our own hands.’ ”

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—

This is what the Lord says about the men of Anathoth who wanted me dead. They had said,“ We will kill you if you do not stop prophesying in the Lord’s name.”

Therefore, here is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who intend to take your life. They warn,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, so that you do not die by our hand”;

“ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth who seek your life, saying,‘ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, lest you die by our hand’—

Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Thou shalt not prophesy in the name of Jehovah, that thou die not by our hand;

Therefore, here is what the Lord says concerning the people of Anathoth who want to take your life. They warn,“ You must not prophesy in the name of Yahweh, or you will certainly die at our hand.”

Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:

Then the LORD told me about some men from Anathoth who were threatening to kill me. They had threatened,“ Stop prophesying in the name of the LORD or we will kill you!”

“ Therefore Yahweh says concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying,‘ You shall not prophesy in Yahweh’s name, that you not die by our hand;’

In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day— for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

I hear many whispering,“ Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying,“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

They say to the seers,“ See no more visions!” and to the prophets,“ Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions.

“ If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?Your relatives, members of your own family— even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.

“ But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.

The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.

But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said,“ You must die!

“ The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.

“ Truly I tell you,” he continued,“ no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

“ You stiff- necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—

Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehukal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’And this is what the Lord says:‘ This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”Then the officials said to the king,“ This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”“ He is in your hands,” King Zedekiah answered.“ The king can do nothing to oppose you.”So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

When the priest Pashhur son of Immer, the official in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things,he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the Lord’s temple.

For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.

“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

“ Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.For I have come to turn“‘ a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”Amos answered Amaziah,“ I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore- fig trees.But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me,‘ Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’Now then, hear the word of the Lord. You say,“‘ Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’

“ Do not prophesy,” their prophets say.“ Do not prophesy about these things; disgrace will not overtake us.”You descendants of Jacob, should it be said,“ Does the Lord become impatient? Does he do such things?”“ Do not my words do good to the one whose ways are upright?Lately my people have risen up like an enemy. You strip off the rich robe from those who pass by without a care, like men returning from battle.You drive the women of my people from their pleasant homes. You take away my blessing from their children forever.Get up, go away! For this is not your resting place, because it is defiled, it is ruined, beyond all remedy.If a liar and deceiver comes and says,‘ I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’ that would be just the prophet for this people!
