When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them,“ Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are to possess, you must pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

“ The following tribes must stand to bless the people on Mount Gerizim when you cross the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”

All the people, rulers, leaders, and judges were standing on either side of the ark, in front of the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD. Both resident foreigners and native Israelites were there. Half the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and the other half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the LORD’s servant had previously instructed to them to do for the formal blessing ceremony.

No, this is the kind of fast I want. I want you to remove the sinful chains, to tear away the ropes of the burdensome yoke, to set free the oppressed, and to break every burdensome yoke.I want you to share your food with the hungry and to provide shelter for homeless, oppressed people. When you see someone naked, clothe him! Don’t turn your back on your own flesh and blood!Then your light will shine like the sunrise; your restoration will quickly arrive; your godly behavior will go before you, and the LORD’s splendor will be your rear guard.Then you will call out, and the LORD will respond; you will cry out, and he will reply,‘ Here I am.’ You must remove the burdensome yoke from among you and stop pointing fingers and speaking sinfully.You must actively help the hungry and feed the oppressed. Then your light will dispel the darkness, and your darkness will be transformed into noonday.

Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!”God says this to the evildoer:“ How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant?For you hate instruction and reject my words.When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives.You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive.You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother.When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you!

For judgment is merciless for the one who has shown no mercy. But mercy triumphs over judgment.

Then the slave threw himself to the ground before him, saying,‘ Be patient with me, and I will repay you everything.’The lord had compassion on that slave and released him, and forgave him the debt.After he went out, that same slave found one of his fellow slaves who owed him one hundred silver coins. So he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him, saying,‘ Pay back what you owe me!’Then his fellow slave threw himself down and begged him,‘ Be patient with me, and I will repay you.’But he refused. Instead, he went out and threw him in prison until he repaid the debt.When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were very upset and went and told their lord everything that had taken place.Then his lord called the first slave and said to him,‘ Evil slave! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me!Should you not have shown mercy to your fellow slave, just as I showed it to you?’And in anger his lord turned him over to the prison guards to torture him until he repaid all he owed.

Then they will call to me, but I will not answer; they will diligently seek me, but they will not find me.Because they hated moral knowledge, and did not choose to fear the LORD,

The one who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

The one who shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and will not be answered.

When you spread out your hands in prayer, I look the other way; when you offer your many prayers, I do not listen, because your hands are covered with blood.

You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me.They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them.
