當時，約書亞轉回奪了夏瑣，用刀擊殺夏瑣王。（素來夏瑣在這諸國中是為首的。）以色列人用刀擊殺城中的人口，將他們盡行殺滅；凡有氣息的沒有留下一個。約書亞又用火焚燒夏瑣。

因為他沒有甚麼償還之物，主人吩咐把他和他妻子兒女，並一切所有的都賣了償還。

耶和華如此說：我休你們的母親，休書在哪裏呢？我將你們賣給我哪一個債主呢？你們被賣，是因你們的罪孽；你們的母親被休，是因你們的過犯。

耶和華的怒氣向以色列人發作，就把他們交在搶奪他們的人手中，又將他們付與四圍仇敵的手中，甚至他們在仇敵面前再不能站立得住。他們無論往何處去，耶和華都以災禍攻擊他們，正如耶和華所說的話，又如耶和華向他們所起的誓；他們便極其困苦。
