They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.

要记住这四十年来你们的上帝耶和华怎样在旷野引领你们，祂磨炼你们、考验你们，好知道你们的心意如何、肯不肯遵守祂的诫命。

你们中间必然会有分裂的事，好显出谁是经得起考验的。

摩西向耶和华呼求，耶和华就指示他把一棵树丢在水中，使水变得甘甜。耶和华又在玛拉给百姓订下一些律例和法令，并在那里试验他们，

他来要按照撒旦的伎俩行各样虚假的异能、神迹和奇事，用尽各样诡计欺骗那些将要灭亡的人，因为他们不喜欢接受那能拯救他们的真理。上帝就让他们是非不辨，去相信那些虚假的谎言，使一切不相信真理、反喜爱不义的人都被定罪。
