約書亞和以色列眾人在他們面前假裝戰敗，往那通曠野的路上逃跑。城裏的眾人都應召來追趕他們；艾城人追趕約書亞時，就被引誘離開了城。艾城和伯特利城沒有剩下一個人不出來追趕以色列人的；他們都撇了敞開的城門、去追趕以色列人。永恆主對約書亞說：『你伸出手裏的短槍指着艾城，因為我要將城交在你手裏』；約書亞就伸出手裏的短槍指着那城。他一伸手，伏兵就從埋伏地方急忙起來，跑進城去，攻取了城，連忙放火燒城。艾城的人向後一看，哎呀，城中煙氣往天上冒，他們要向這兒向那兒逃跑、都無從着手；往曠野逃跑的眾人便轉身攻擊追趕他們的人。約書亞和以色列眾人見伏兵已經攻取了城，又見城中煙氣直往上冒，就轉回去、擊殺了艾城的人。攻取了城的人也出城迎擊艾城人；艾城人就困在以色列人中間，這邊也有，那邊也有。於是以色列人擊殺了他們，連一個殘存的或逃脫的、都沒有給他留下。連艾王、他們也活活捉住，解到約書亞那裏。以色列人殺盡了艾城所有的居民、於田間、於野外、就是他們追趕以色列人的地方；艾城人全都倒斃在刀劍之下、直到滅盡；以色列眾人就回艾城，用刀擊殺了城中的人。那一天倒斃的人、連男帶女、共有一萬二千人，就是艾城所有的人。約書亞總沒有收回伸出短槍的手，直到把艾城所有的居民盡行殺滅歸神，才把手收回來。只是城中的牲口和被掠物、以色列人倒劫為己有，是照永恆主的話、就是他所吩咐約書亞的。約書亞燒了艾城，使城永做廢堆山、一片荒涼、直到今日。又將艾王掛在示眾木上、直到晚上時候。日落時、約書亞吩咐，人就把屍體從示眾木上取下來，丟在城門口，又在屍體上立起一大堆石頭；那石頭到今日還在。
