The tribe of Benjamin heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites said,“ Tell us how this awful thing happened.”

( Now the people of Benjamin heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the people of Israel said,“ Tell us, how did this evil happen?”

( Word soon reached the land of Benjamin that the other tribes had gone up to Mizpah.) The Israelites then asked how this terrible crime had happened.

( Now the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the sons of Israel said,“ Tell us, how did this wickedness take place?”

( Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the children of Israel said,“ Tell us, how did this wicked deed happen?”

( Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpah.) And the children of Israel said, Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?

While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house,“ Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”The owner of the house went outside and said to them,“ No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

“ Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

“ Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”

The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
