Phinehas was serving as priest at the ark. He was the son of Eleazar. Eleazar was the son of Aaron. The Israelites asked,“ Should we go up again to fight against the men of Benjamin? They are our fellow Israelites.” The Lord answered,“ Go. Tomorrow I will hand them over to you.”

Now on the same night it came about that the Lord said to him,“ Arise, go down against the camp, for I have handed it over to you.

For the Lord your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand to serve in the name of the Lord always.

And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which was given to him in the hill country of Ephraim.

At that time the Lord singled out the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to serve Him and to bless in His name, until this day.

So when Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the congregation, that is, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words which the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Manasseh,“ Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this unfaithful act against the Lord; now you have saved the sons of Israel from the hand of the Lord.”Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the sons of Reuben and from the sons of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and brought back word to them.

So David inquired of the Lord once more. And the Lord answered him and said,“ Arise, go down to Keilah, for I am going to hand the Philistines over to you.”Then David and his men went to Keilah and fought the Philistines; and he drove away their livestock and struck them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.Now it came about, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David at Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.When it was reported to Saul that David had come to Keilah, Saul said,“ God has handed him over to me, for he shut himself in by entering a city with double gates and bars.”So Saul summoned all the people for war, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.But David knew that Saul was plotting evil against him; so he said to Abiathar the priest,“ Bring the ephod here.”Then David said,“ Lord God of Israel, Your servant has heard for certain that Saul is seeking to come to Keilah to destroy the city on my account.Will the citizens of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down just as Your servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, please, tell Your servant.” And the Lord said,“ He will come down.”Then David said,“ Will the citizens of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?” And the Lord said,“ They will hand you over.”

You need not fight in this battle; take your position, stand and watch the salvation of the Lord in your behalf, Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow, go out to face them, for the Lord is with you.”

I know, Lord, that a person’s way is not in himself, Nor is it in a person who walks to direct his steps.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

The Lord said,“ Judah shall go up; behold, I have handed the land over to him.”

And the anger of the Lord burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.Then David became angry because of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah; and that place has been called Perez uzzah to this day.So David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said,“ How can the ark of the Lord come to me?”And David was unwilling to move the ark of the Lord into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of Obed edom, the Gittite.The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed edom and all his household.Now it was reported to King David, saying,“ The Lord has blessed the house of Obed edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” So David went and brought the ark of God up from the house of Obed edom to the city of David with joy.

And Joshua said,“ Oh, Lord God! Why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan, only to hand us over to the Amorites, to eliminate us? If only we had been willing to live beyond the Jordan!

Then the sons of Israel sent to the sons of Reuben, to the sons of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

And David inquired of the Lord, saying,“ Shall I pursue this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?” And He said to him,“ Pursue, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue everyone.”

So David inquired of the Lord, saying,“ Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You hand them over to me?” And the Lord said to David,“ Go up, for I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.”Then David came to Baal perazim and defeated them there; and he said,“ The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place Baal perazim.And the Philistines abandoned their idols there, so David and his men carried them away.Now the Philistines came up once again and overran the Valley of Rephaim.So David inquired of the Lord, but He said,“ You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the baka shrubs.And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baka shrubs, then you shall act promptly, for then the Lord will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

So Saul inquired of God:“ Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You hand them over to Israel?” But He did not answer him on that day.

When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,and he went after the man of Israel into the inner room of the tent and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through the abdomen. So the plague on the sons of Israel was brought to a halt.But those who died from the plague were twenty four thousand in number.Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel in My jealousy.Therefore say,‘ Behold, I am giving him My covenant of peace;and it shall be for him and for his descendants after him, a covenant of a permanent priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.’ ”

They had mounted the ark of God on a new cart and moved it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart.
