Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

未擺陣之先，以色列人上去，在耶和華面前哭號，直到晚上，求問耶和華說：「我們再去與我們弟兄便雅憫人打仗可以不可以？」耶和華說：「可以上去攻擊他們。」

那時，我在亞哈瓦河邊宣告禁食，為要在我們神面前克苦己心，求他使我們和婦人孩子，並一切所有的，都得平坦的道路。

以色列人就起來，到伯特利去求問神說：「我們中間誰當首先上去與便雅憫人爭戰呢？」耶和華說：「猶大當先上去。」

凡為以色列神言語戰兢的，都因這被擄歸回之人所犯的罪聚集到我這裏來。我就驚懼憂悶而坐，直到獻晚祭的時候。獻晚祭的時候我起來，心中愁苦，穿着撕裂的衣袍，雙膝跪下向耶和華－我的神舉手，

耶和華說：雖然如此，你們應當禁食、哭泣、悲哀，一心歸向我。你們要撕裂心腸，不撕裂衣服。歸向耶和華－你們的神；因為他有恩典，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛的慈愛，並且後悔不降所說的災。或者他轉意後悔，留下餘福，就是留下獻給耶和華－你們神的素祭和奠祭，也未可知。你們要在錫安吹角，分定禁食的日子，宣告嚴肅會。聚集眾民，使會眾自潔：招聚老者，聚集孩童和吃奶的；使新郎出離洞房，新婦出離內室。事奉耶和華的祭司要在廊子和祭壇中間哭泣，說：耶和華啊，求你顧惜你的百姓，不要使你的產業受羞辱，列邦管轄他們。為何容列國的人說：「他們的神在哪裏」呢？耶和華就為自己的地發熱心，憐恤他的百姓。

約沙法便懼怕，定意尋求耶和華，在猶大全地宣告禁食。

你們要分定禁食的日子，宣告嚴肅會，招聚長老和國中的一切居民到耶和華－你們神的殿，向耶和華哀求。

尼尼微人信服神，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿麻衣。這信息傳到尼尼微王的耳中，他就下了寶座，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他又使人遍告尼尼微通城，說：「王和大臣有令，人不可嘗甚麼，牲畜、牛羊不可吃草，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都當披上麻布；人要切切求告神。各人回頭離開所行的惡道，丟棄手中的強暴。或者神轉意後悔，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡，也未可知。」於是神察看他們的行為，見他們離開惡道，他就後悔，不把所說的災禍降與他們了。

他們就聚集在米斯巴，打水澆在耶和華面前，當日禁食，說：「我們得罪了耶和華。」於是撒母耳在米斯巴審判以色列人。
