Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

未摆阵之先，以色列人上去，在耶和华面前哭号，直到晚上，求问耶和华说：“我们再去与我们弟兄便雅悯人打仗可以不可以？”耶和华说：“可以上去攻击他们。”

那时，我在亚哈瓦河边宣告禁食，为要在我们神面前克苦己心，求他使我们和妇人孩子，并一切所有的，都得平坦的道路。

以色列人就起来，到伯特利去求问神说：“我们中间谁当首先上去与便雅悯人争战呢？”耶和华说：“犹大当先上去。”

凡为以色列神言语战兢的，都因这被掳归回之人所犯的罪聚集到我这里来。我就惊惧忧闷而坐，直到献晚祭的时候。献晚祭的时候我起来，心中愁苦，穿着撕裂的衣袍，双膝跪下向耶和华我的神举手，

耶和华说：“虽然如此，你们应当禁食、哭泣、悲哀，一心归向我。”你们要撕裂心肠，不撕裂衣服。归向耶和华你们的神；因为他有恩典，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，有丰盛的慈爱，并且后悔不降所说的灾。或者他转意后悔，留下余福，就是留下献给耶和华你们神的素祭和奠祭，也未可知。你们要在锡安吹角，分定禁食的日子，宣告严肃会。聚集众民，使会众自洁：招聚老者，聚集孩童和吃奶的；使新郎出离洞房，新妇出离内室。侍奉耶和华的祭司要在廊子和祭坛中间哭泣，说：“耶和华啊，求你顾惜你的百姓，不要使你的产业受羞辱，列邦管辖他们。为何容列国的人说：‘他们的神在哪里呢？’”耶和华就为自己的地发热心，怜恤他的百姓。

约沙法便惧怕，定意寻求耶和华，在犹大全地宣告禁食。

你们要分定禁食的日子，宣告严肃会，招聚长老和国中的一切居民到耶和华你们神的殿，向耶和华哀求。

尼尼微人信服神，便宣告禁食，从最大的到至小的都穿麻衣。这信息传到尼尼微王的耳中，他就下了宝座，脱下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他又使人遍告尼尼微通城，说：“王和大臣有令，人不可尝什么，牲畜、牛羊不可吃草，也不可喝水。人与牲畜都当披上麻布；人要切切求告神。各人回头离开所行的恶道，丢弃手中的强暴。或者神转意后悔，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡，也未可知。”于是神察看他们的行为，见他们离开恶道，他就后悔，不把所说的灾祸降与他们了。

他们就聚集在米斯巴，打水浇在耶和华面前，当日禁食，说：“我们得罪了耶和华。”于是撒母耳在米斯巴审判以色列人。
