Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

尼尼微人就相信神，并宣告禁食，无论尊贵的或卑微的，都披上麻布。这话语传到尼尼微王的时候，他从自己的宝座上起来，从身上脱下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰烬中。然后他颁布谕令，说：“在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：‘无论人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可尝什么，不可吃什么，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都当披上麻布；各人都当迫切地向神呼求，从自己邪恶的道路上、自己手里的残暴中转回。或许神会转回、施怜悯，从他猛烈的怒气中转回，使我们不致灭亡。’”神看到他们所行的——从邪恶的道路上转回了，神就施怜悯，没有降下原先所说的要降在他们身上的灾祸。

他们就聚集到米斯巴，打了水，浇奠在耶和华面前。当天他们禁食，并且在那里宣告：“我们对耶和华犯了罪！”于是撒母耳在米斯巴作了以色列子民的士师。
