Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

耶和华说：“现在，你们要禁食、哭泣、哀号，全心回转归向我。”你们要撕心般地悔改，而不是撕裂衣服。归向你们的上帝耶和华吧，因为祂有恩典和怜悯，不轻易发怒，有无限的慈爱，不忍心降灾祸。谁知道呢？或许祂转念心生怜悯，给你们留下祝福，使你们可以再次向你们的上帝耶和华献上素祭和奠祭。要在锡安山吹响号角，宣布禁食的日子，举行庄严的聚会。要招聚老人，聚集孩童，包括吃奶的婴儿；要吩咐新郎出洞房、新娘出内室；要召集全体人民，让他们洁净自己。让事奉耶和华的祭司站在圣殿门廊和祭坛中间，哭泣恳求说：“耶和华啊，求你顾惜你的子民，不要让外族人侮辱、讥笑你的产业说，‘你们的上帝在哪里呢？’”耶和华为自己的土地发热心，祂怜悯自己的子民。

约沙法很害怕，决定寻求耶和华，在整个犹大宣告禁食。

你们要定一个禁食的日子，举行庄严的聚会，召集全国的长老和人民，到你们的上帝耶和华的殿中，向耶和华呼求。

尼尼微城的人相信了上帝的话，便宣告禁食，所有的人，无论大小贵贱都换上麻衣。尼尼微王听到这消息后，便走下宝座，脱下王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。王又向全城颁布命令，说：“王和大臣有令，所有的人都必须禁食，牛羊牲畜都不许吃草也不许喝水。人和牲畜都必须披上麻衣，众人要向上帝恳切呼求，改邪归正，停止作恶。上帝或许会施怜悯，收回烈怒，使我们不致灭亡，也未可知。”上帝看见他们改邪归正，不再作恶，就怜悯他们，没有像所说的那样毁灭他们。

他们就在那里聚集，打水倒在耶和华面前，并在当天禁食。他们说：“我们得罪了耶和华。”于是，撒母耳在米斯巴做以色列人的士师。
