The five men who had spied out the land went inside and took the idol, the ephod and the household gods while the priest and the six hundred armed men stood at the entrance of the gate.

The five men who had looked over the land went inside. They took the statue covered with silver. They also took the family gods and the linen apron. During that time, the priest stood at the entrance of the gate. The 600 men stood there with him. They were prepared for battle.

And the five men who had gone to scout out the land went up and entered and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war.

非利士人把祭司和占卜者们召来，问：“我们应该怎么处理耶和华的约柜呢？请指示我们应该怎样把它送回原处。”他们回答：“如果你们要送回以色列神的约柜，不要空手送回，一定要把赔罪的礼物带给以色列的神。这样你们就可以痊愈，也知道为什么他的手不离开你们。”非利士人就问：“我们应该带给他什么赔罪的礼物呢？”他们回答：“按着非利士首领的数目，带上五个金肿物和五只金老鼠，因为同一个瘟疫临到了你们所有的人和你们的首领们。你们要制造肿物雕像和毁坏土地的老鼠雕像，要归荣耀给以色列的神，或许他会对你们、你们的神、你们的土地放松他的手。你们为什么心里刚硬，像埃及人和法老那样心里刚硬呢？当神折辱他们的时候，他们不是放走了以色列人吗？以色列人不是离开了吗？“现在，你们要预备一辆新车，牵来两头没有负过轭的哺乳期母牛，把母牛套在车上，把牛犊牵回圈里，不让牛犊跟着母牛。你们要把耶和华的约柜带来放在车上，把带给耶和华作赔罪礼物的金器装入盒子，放在约柜旁边，然后送约柜走，任由它去。你们要观察：如果约柜往自己的地界伯示麦方向去，那么就是耶和华对我们降下了这大灾祸；如果不是这样，我们就知道：不是耶和华的手击打我们，而是偶然发生在我们身上的。”

神的约柜被夺去，以利的两个儿子何弗尼和非尼哈也死了。

他们把神像抬起，扛在肩上，又把它安置就位；它就在那里呆立不动。尽管人向它呼求，它也不回应，更不能救人脱离患难。

彼勒屈伏，尼波屈蹲，它们的像驮在走兽和牲畜上。你们所抬的成了重负，成了疲乏牲畜的负载。它们一同屈蹲、屈伏，不但不能保全负载，连自己也被掳去了。
