非利士人將上帝的櫃扛進大袞的廟，安置在大袞的旁邊。第二天亞實突人清早起來；只見大袞仆倒在永恆主的櫃前，臉伏於地；他們就把大袞立在原處。又第二天早晨、他們清早起來；又見大袞仆倒在永恆主的櫃前，臉伏於地；並且大袞的頭和兩手臂都被割斷在門檻上，只剩下大袞的軀幹。因此在亞實突、大袞的祭司和一切進大袞廟的人、直到今日、都不踐踏大袞的門限。

用那能敗壞的人類、飛鳥、走獸、昆蟲之像的樣式、去代換那不能朽壞的上帝之榮耀。所以在他們心裏的私慾中、上帝就把他們放給污穢、去彼此侮辱自己的身體。這種人用了假去替換上帝之真，敬拜事奉了被創造之物，而不敬奉創造之主：就是應當受祝頌、萬世無窮的。阿們。

『如今呢、這些人竟以我為歌曲，以我為笑談。他們厭惡我，遠避着我；一見面、就向我吐唾沫，毫不檢束。

他們將掃羅的軍裝放在他們的神廟裏，將他的首級釘在大袞廟中。

你的仇敵仆倒時，你不要歡喜；他跌倒時，你的心不要快樂；

但我顛沛時，他們卻歡喜聚集，聚集來攻擊我，直擊打着，我竟不知不覺；直撕裂着，也不靜息；竟以滑稽小丑的褻瀆向我咬牙切齒。

我乃是說外國人所祭獻的、是祭獻給鬼，不是獻與上帝。我不願意你們成了有分於鬼的人。

萬族之民雖各奉自己的神的名而行，我們呢、卻要奉我們的上帝永恆主的名而行、直到永永遠遠。

所以論到喫祭偶像之物這一件事、我們知道偶像在世上算不了甚麼，也知道除了一位上帝以外、沒有別的上帝。因為雖或有所謂神的——或是在天、或是在地，就如那許多的「神」、許多的「主」——

哪有一國換了他們的神呢？其實那些並不是神；但我的人民卻將他們的榮耀換了那無益的神。
