The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said,“ You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son.

He said,“ I will certainly return to you at this time next year; and behold, your wife Sarah will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.

It came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying,“ Because I have asked for him of the Lord.”

Then he said,“ At this season next year, you are going to embrace a son.” And she said,“ No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your servant.”

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying,“ A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. So I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.

So the woman hurried and ran, and told her husband,“ Behold, the man who came the other day has appeared to me!”

I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

Now the angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.He said,“ Hagar, Sarai’s slave woman, from where have you come, and where are you going?” And she said,“ I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”So the angel of the Lord said to her,“ Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.”The angel of the Lord also said to her,“ I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count.”The angel of the Lord said to her further,“ Behold, you are pregnant, And you will give birth to a son; And you shall name him Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction.But he will be a wild donkey of a man; His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live in defiance of all his brothers.”Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her,“ You are a God who sees me”; for she said,“ Have I even seen Him here and lived after He saw me?”

And coming in, he said to her,“ Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”But she was very perplexed at this statement, and was pondering what kind of greeting this was.And the angel said to her,“ Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”But Mary said to the angel,“ How will this be, since I am a virgin?”The angel answered and said to her,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.And behold, even your relative Elizabeth herself has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called infertile is now in her sixth month.For nothing will be impossible with God.”And Mary said,“ Behold, the Lord’s bond servant; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
