但上帝卻揀選了世界上愚拙的，要使有智慧的慚愧；上帝又揀選了世界上軟弱的，要使強壯的慚愧；上帝也揀選了世界上寒微的、被藐視的、無有的，要廢掉那些有的，使一切血肉之人、在上帝面前、都不能誇口。

但是有些無賴子說：『這傢伙怎能拯救我們呢？』就藐視他，沒有給他送禮物。

亞捫人又渡過約但河、來攻打猶大、便雅憫、和以法蓮家族；以色列人就非常困苦。

人民對撒母耳說：『那說「掃羅哪能作王管理我們？」的是誰？將這些人交出來，我們好處死他們。』

匠人所棄掉的石頭，已成了房角石的頭一塊。這由永恆主作成；我們看為希奇。

掃羅聽見這些話，就被上帝的靈大大感動，怒氣大發。將一對牛切成塊子，由使者經手送遍以色列四境，說：『凡不出來跟從掃羅和撒母耳的，也必這樣待他的牛。』於是眾民都起了懼怕永恆主的心，大家就都出來、如同一人。

『這位摩西、族民所棄絕而對他說：「誰設立你做官長和審判員」的，這一位、上帝卻藉那在刺叢中向他顯現的天使的手、差遣了，做執政者做釋放者。是這個人領族民出來，在埃及、在紅海、在野地、行了奇事神迹四十年。這就是那一位摩西，那曾對以色列人說：「上帝必從你們弟兄中給你們挺生一位神言人、像挺生了我一樣」的。這個人就是跟那在野地裏公會中和西乃山上對他說話的天使在一起、又跟我們的祖宗在一起而作中間人的；他接受了活活的神諭要傳給我們。我們的祖宗不肯聽從他，倒給推開了，心裏轉向着埃及，

當時亞捫人應召而集，在基列紮營；以色列人也聚集，紮營在米斯巴。基列的人民、基列的首領、就彼此說：『哪一個人能先去攻打亞捫人，那一個人就可以做基列一切居民的首領。』
