When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried,“ Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”

Now one of our tribes is missing from Israel!”Early the next morning the people built an altar and presented their burnt offerings and peace offerings on it.Then they said,“ Who among the tribes of Israel did not join us at Mizpah when we held our assembly in the presence of the Lord?” At that time they had taken a solemn oath in the Lord’s presence, vowing that anyone who refused to come would be put to death.The Israelites felt sorry for their brother Benjamin and said,“ Today one of the tribes of Israel has been cut off.How can we find wives for the few who remain, since we have sworn by the Lord not to give them our daughters in marriage?”

As they were on the way back to Jerusalem, this report reached David:“ Absalom has killed all the king’s sons; not one is left alive!”The king got up, tore his robe, and threw himself on the ground. His advisers also tore their clothes in horror and sorrow.

A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.“ If a young woman makes a vow to the Lord or a pledge under oath while she is still living at her father’s home,and her father hears of the vow or pledge and does not object to it, then all her vows and pledges will stand.But if her father refuses to let her fulfill the vow or pledge on the day he hears of it, then all her vows and pledges will become invalid. The Lord will forgive her because her father would not let her fulfill them.

Jacob exclaimed,“ You are robbing me of my children! Joseph is gone! Simeon is gone! And now you want to take Benjamin, too. Everything is going against me!”Then Reuben said to his father,“ You may kill my two sons if I don’t bring Benjamin back to you. I’ll be responsible for him, and I promise to bring him back.”But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white haired man to his grave.”

Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool.When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him.It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it.Don’t let your mouth make you sin. And don’t defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.

Some time later, Reuben returned to get Joseph out of the cistern. When he discovered that Joseph was missing, he tore his clothes in grief.Then he went back to his brothers and lamented,“ The boy is gone! What will I do now?”

so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted.At her mother’s urging, the girl said,“ I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!”Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.

Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.

“ Yes, Jonathan,” Saul said,“ you must die! May God strike me and even kill me if you do not die for this.”But the people broke in and said to Saul,“ Jonathan has won this great victory for Israel. Should he die? Far from it! As surely as the Lord lives, not one hair on his head will be touched, for God helped him do a great deed today.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

“ However, anything specially set apart for the Lord— whether a person, an animal, or family property— must never be sold or bought back. Anything devoted in this way has been set apart as holy, and it belongs to the Lord.No person specially set apart for destruction may be bought back. Such a person must be put to death.

Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts.

They went to the leading priests and elders and told them,“ We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we have killed Paul.

Then Jacob tore his clothes and dressed himself in burlap. He mourned deeply for his son for a long time.His family all tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.“ I will go to my grave mourning for my son,” he would say, and then he would weep.
