When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried,“ Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”

When Jephthah saw her, he was so upset that he tore his clothes. He cried out,“ Oh no, my daughter! You have filled me with trouble and sorrow. I’ve made a promise to the Lord. And I can’t break it.”

The Israelites had taken an oath in Mizpah, saying,“ Not one of us will allow his daughter to marry a Benjaminite.”So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, weeping loudly and uncontrollably.They said,“ Why, O LORD God of Israel, has this happened in Israel?” An entire tribe has disappeared from Israel today!”The next morning the people got up early and built an altar there. They offered up burnt sacrifices and token of peace.The Israelites asked,“ Who from all the Israelite tribes has not assembled before the LORD?” They had made a solemn oath that whoever did not assemble before the LORD at Mizpah must certainly be executed.The Israelites regretted what had happened to their brother Benjamin. They said,“ Today we cut off an entire tribe from Israel!How can we find wives for those who are left? After all, we took an oath in the LORD’s name not to give them our daughters as wives.”

While they were still on their way, the following report reached David:“ Absalom has killed all the king’s sons; not one of them is left!”Then the king stood up and tore his garments and lay down on the ground. All his servants were standing there with torn garments as well.

If a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath of binding obligation on himself, he must not break his word, but must do whatever he has promised.“ If a young woman who is still living in her father’s house makes a vow to the LORD or places herself under an obligation,and her father hears of her vow or the obligation to which she has pledged herself, and her father remains silent about her, then all her vows will stand, and every obligation to which she has pledged herself will stand.But if her father overrules her when he hears about it, then none of her vows or her obligations which she has pledged for herself will stand. And the LORD will release her from it, because her father overruled her.

Their father Jacob said to them,“ You are making me childless! Joseph is gone. Simeon is gone. And now you want to take Benjamin! Everything is against me.”Then Reuben said to his father,“ You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my care and I will bring him back to you.”But Jacob replied,“ My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If an accident happens to him on the journey you have to make, then you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to the grave.”

Do not be rash with your mouth or hasty in your heart to bring up a matter before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth! Therefore, let your words be few.Just as dreams come when there are many cares, so the rash vow of a fool occurs when there are many words.When you make a vow to God, do not delay in paying it. For God takes no pleasure in fools: Pay what you vow!It is better for you not to vow than to vow and not pay it.Do not let your mouth cause you to sin, and do not tell the priest,“ It was a mistake!” Why make God angry at you so that he would destroy the work of your hands?”

Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! He tore his clothes,returned to his brothers, and said,“ The boy isn’t there! And I, where can I go?”

so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.Instructed by her mother, she said,“ Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”Although it grieved the king, because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.

Then Job got up and tore his robe. He shaved his head, and then he threw himself down with his face to the ground.

Saul said,“ God will punish me severely if Jonathan doesn’t die!”But the army said to Saul,“ Should Jonathan, who won this great victory in Israel, die? May it never be! As surely as the LORD lives, not a single hair of his head will fall to the ground! For it is with the help of God that he has acted today.” So the army rescued Jonathan from death.

“‘ Surely anything which a man permanently dedicates to the LORD from all that belongs to him, whether from people, animals, or his landed property, must be neither sold nor redeemed; anything permanently dedicated is most holy to the LORD.Any human being who is permanently dedicated must not be ransomed; such a person must be put to death.

He despises a reprobate, but honors the LORD’s loyal followers. He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise.

They went to the chief priests and the elders and said,“ We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to partake of anything until we have killed Paul.

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned for his son many days.All his sons and daughters stood by him to console him, but he refused to be consoled.“ No,” he said,“ I will go to the grave mourning my son.” So Joseph’s father wept for him.
