When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried,“ Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.”

When Jephthah saw her, he was so upset that he tore his clothes. He cried out,“ Oh no, my daughter! You have filled me with trouble and sorrow. I’ve made a promise to the Lord. And I can’t break it.”

And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said,“ Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.”

以色列人曾在米斯巴起誓不把女兒嫁給便雅憫人。他們來到伯特利，坐在上帝面前放聲痛哭，直到黃昏。他們說：「以色列的上帝耶和華啊，以色列為何少了一個支派呢？為何發生了這樣的事呢？」第二天，眾人清早起來在那裡築了一座祭壇，獻上燔祭和平安祭。他們彼此議論說：「我們到米斯巴聚集在耶和華面前的時候，各支派中誰沒有來呢？」原來，他們曾經起誓說：凡不到米斯巴聚集在耶和華面前的人都要被處死。以色列人為他們的同胞便雅憫人難過，說：「如今以色列絕了一個支派。我們曾經在耶和華面前起誓，決不把女兒嫁給便雅憫人，現在我們應該怎麼辦才能使他們剩下來的人得到妻子呢？」

他們還在路上的時候，有人稟告大衛說：「押沙龍把王子都殺了，無一倖免！」王便站起來撕裂衣服，躺在地上。他的臣僕也都撕裂衣服，站在旁邊。

「倘若人在什麼事上向耶和華許願或起誓，他就不可食言，必須履行諾言。倘若未出嫁的少女在什麼事上向耶和華許願或起誓，倘若她父親得知她許的願或起的誓後沒有反對，她就必須履行諾言；倘若她父親得知後加以反對，她的諾言就無效。耶和華必不追究她，因為她父親反對。

雅各說：「你們使我連連失去兒子，約瑟沒了，西緬沒了，你們還要帶走便雅憫！災禍都落在了我頭上！」呂便對父親說：「要是我不把便雅憫帶回你身邊，你就殺了我的兩個兒子吧！請你把便雅憫放心地交給我，我一定會把他帶回你身邊。」雅各說：「我的兒子不可跟你們去。他哥哥已經死了，現在只剩下他。要是他在路上遇到什麼意外，你們會使我這白髮蒼蒼的老人淒淒慘慘地進墳墓。」

在上帝面前不要冒失開口，不可急於發言，因為祂在天上，你在地上。所以，你要少言寡語。事務繁雜，夜裡多夢；多言多語，顯出愚昧。你向上帝許願，不可遲遲不還，因為祂不喜歡這樣的愚人。要還所許的願。與其許了願不還，倒不如不許。不要在言語上犯罪，也不要在祭司面前說許錯了願。為什麼用言語惹上帝發怒，以致祂摧毀你手中的工作呢？

呂便回到井邊發現約瑟不見了，就傷心地撕裂了身上的衣服，回到弟兄們那裡說：「那少年不見了，我現在怎麼辦？」

就起誓答應她無論要什麼都可以。她受了母親的指使，說：「請把施洗者約翰的頭放在盤子裡送給我。」希律感到為難，但既然在眾賓客面前起了誓，只好下令給她。

約伯站起來，撕裂外袍，剃掉頭髮，俯伏在地上敬拜，

掃羅說：「約拿單啊，你必須死。否則，願上帝重重地懲罰我。」但眾人對掃羅說：「今天約拿單給以色列人帶來這麼大的勝利，難道要他死嗎？絕對不可以！我們憑永活的耶和華起誓，絕不可動他一根頭髮，因為他今天的行動有上帝的幫助。」眾人就這樣救了約拿單的性命。

凡永遠獻上的，不論是人、牲畜或是田產，都不可賣掉，也不可贖回，因為這一切都屬於耶和華，是至聖的。凡永遠獻上的人不可被贖回，必須被處死。

他鄙視惡人，尊重那些敬畏耶和華的人。他起了誓，即使吃虧也不背誓。

他們去見祭司長和長老，說：「我們已經發了誓，不殺保羅不吃飯。

雅各撕裂自己的衣服，束上麻布，為約瑟哀傷了好幾天。他的兒女都來安慰他，他卻不肯接受他們的安慰，說：「我一定會淒淒慘慘地下到陰間，去我兒子那裡。」約瑟的父親為他哀哭。
