When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah.

Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah.

Was shield or spear to be seen among forty thousand in Israel?My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the Lord.“ Tell of it, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets and you who walk by the way.To the sound of musicians at the watering places, there they repeat the righteous triumphs of the Lord, the righteous triumphs of his villagers in Israel.“ Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.“ Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, break out in a song! Arise, Barak, lead away your captives, O son of Abinoam.Then down marched the remnant of the noble; the people of the Lord marched down for me against the mighty.From Ephraim their root they marched down into the valley, following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen; from Machir marched down the commanders, and from Zebulun those who bear the lieutenant’s staff;the princes of Issachar came with Deborah, and Issachar faithful to Barak; into the valley they rushed at his heels. Among the clans of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.Why did you sit still among the sheepfolds, to hear the whistling for the flocks? And behold, a man from the crowd cried out,“ Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.

Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!

for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.

As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,“ Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
