When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

Again I will build you so that you will be rebuilt, Virgin Israel. You will take up your tambourines again and go out in joyful dancing.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead. The people made him their leader and commander, and Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at Mizpah.

The Ammonites were called together, and they camped in Gilead. So the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.

Singers lead the way, with musicians following; among them are young women playing tambourines.

“ Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at me whom they pierced. They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a firstborn.

Just as he neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town was also with her.

There was great searching of heart among the clans of Reuben.Why did you sit among the sheep pens listening to the playing of pipes for the flocks? Then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the Waters of Megiddo, but they did not plunder the silver.The stars fought from the heavens; the stars fought with Sisera from their paths.The river Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the river Kishon. March on, my soul, in strength!The horses’ hooves then hammered— the galloping, galloping of his stallions.“ Curse Meroz,” says the angel of the LORD,“ Bitterly curse her inhabitants, for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD with the warriors.”Most blessed of women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; she is most blessed among tent-dwelling women.He asked for water; she gave him milk. But may those who love him be like the rising of the sun in its strength. And the land had peace for forty years.

Just then a man from the crowd cried out,“ Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he’s my only child.

Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and flute.

because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him.

As the troops were coming back, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul, singing and dancing with tambourines, with shouts of joy, and with three-stringed instruments.As they danced, the women sang: Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands.
