When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of timbrels! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.

The singers went before, the minstrels followed after, In the midst of the damsels playing with timbrels.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first- born.

And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child:

Praise him with timbrel and dance: Praise him with stringed instruments and pipe.

for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went the multitudes thronged him.

And it came to pass as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels, with joy, and with instruments of music.And the women sang one to another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.
